Why why why didn't i put knee boots on him???
We were just trotting along on a flat lane, no drama, and he just tripped up! He went right down and got his legs all tangled up in the reins when he got up. I fell off but he didn't run off or panic, but his knee is badly skinned.
I called the vet and he has had bute and antibiotics but i feel b****y terrible that i let it happen at all! I always used to use knee boots but stopped for some reason.
Aaagh... am going to tack shop to buy knee boots.
Sorry pointless post but i am so cross with myself had to talk to someone

Yeah, my 4 year old did the same this summer, I was gutted. But they have healed really well.

I couldn't find any knee boots which stayed up, so use Westropp Knee Brushing Boots (from Barnstomers) - if thats any help!

My Po is normally very footsure and has recouped himself from some very nasty stumbles on all types terrains, in over 5 years Iv'e had him he has only gone down once on a lane and skinned his knees, he didn't need the vet but I was upset, I still dont use knee protectors though as it was an isolated incident, he healed up really quick with no permanent marks.

i have always worried that the combined brushing/knee boot type would sort of fold back if the horse fell on them. although ive never actually tried them.
does anyone have any experience of a horse actually going down in knee boots, if so what type were they and did they protect?
Thanks...

my 4 yr old went down on his knees a couple of days ago too, tripped up went on his knees, stood up then fell over again... luckily it was on grass but scary non the less. he was looking at his stable mates in the field and just wasn't paying attention, i thought i was coming off the front. he's only just been shod for the first time - think he forgot he had his high heels on, fortunately there was no damage.

My 4yo also fell on the road in the summer. Smack, straight down, took the hair off both knees but did not break the skin so no long lasting effects. Bought some Westropp knee boots, (not the brushing ones), they fit brilliantly and do not slip. He has not slipped since though! Typical. Hope your lad ok. x

Summer just gone Minnie was out on a hack with a girl that loaned her and she fell on her knees took hair and skin off, and was swollen for a couple of days but hasnt scarred or anything just as normal now

Sorry to hear that, hope he is ok!! But thank you a timely reminder to check mine fit new ned. I always use the leather ones as Honestly I don't think you can beat them. Always stay put

thanks everyone, i've just been to the yard to check him and walk him out in hand for 10mins. he is sound, his knees are both a little bit swollen but not too bad. fingers crossed he will be ok.

My four yr old did the same this yr..trotting along a flat field and bang she was on the floor and it was the only day i wasnt wearing knee boots!! i was worrying it was just her but obviously a regular thing for clumsy babies!! however i have some leather knee boots with elastic inserts they have a really tough knee protector and dont move..they are around 50 pounds and i shall be wearing them for the next 12months at least!! hope your horse is ok and not to sore accidents happen to the best of us

My girl always wears knee boots, we have got Jefferies copies, they are leather and have only come down once and thats because we had a gallop that we were not expecting to have

We do lots of canter work and they are great. Wouldn't be without them

Sounds like your neddie is going to be ok, fingers crossed he is not stiff in the morning xx

Hope your both OK,
Ive got to watch Bear if he's been out for a long hack as he stretches his head down and stumbles.
Tricksy they look really good, I might invest in a pair, he hasn't gone down 'yet'.

I had some leather knee boots when my horse was younger, he was so busy gawping around at everything he often tripped, although only came down once on the road and the knee boots certainly did their job.
