My ponies mane was I'm desperate need of thining, I am no good at pulling so I was told that a solo comb was the way to go.

I have just done it, and yes it has thinned it, but it soo up and down, I made sure I put mane on the wrong side of his neck, and did the same number of runs threw each section and this is the god awful result..

How do I put this wrong right? :(

I think the length is beyond help, I can only suggest pulling/ thinning scissorsing the length even and then wait for it to grow back.

Or just plait all the time so no1 can see it?

You can use the solo comb to shorten the longer bits- take the longest strands, back comb it to the length you want it as opposed to right to the top, and cut as normal with the solo comb. Either that or use scissors and cut upwards to shorten the longer bits! It doesn't look that bad at all just looks unfinished! :)

ahh dont worry everyone has mane disasters once in a while :P. My mare doesnt like her mane being pulled (angel with everything else so came to the assumption it hurt her) and it took a few hit and miss attempts with a mane comb and a pair of scissors to get it right! I would probably back comb the longer pieces (with solocomb) so left with a few strands then cut them at the length to match the surrounding shorter hair. Do this once for the whole lot of mane thats too long and keep going back until its all the same length. If you keep cutting/pulling at the roots it will just get thinner I think! :)

Is he meant to be native or are you going for the 100mm all the way look?
Don't do the same number of rakes on each section, look at how thick the manes is and try to even it out.
If it is going to be all the same length - thinning scissors will take off the longer bits and you can pull the last bits by hand if he'll let you.
Don't despair.

I don't think it looks that bad, honest. Like others have suggested it just needs back combing and cutting so its all the same length.

LOL I did exactly the same thing the first time I used one. I ended up having to try to plait 1" of mane.

A friend kindly pointed out (too late) that the solo comb is for thinning, not really shortening. Apparently you cut it to the length you want with scissors first and then just thin it out with the solo comb. I must admit that has worked.

It doesn't look that bad, it will grow back, you should have seen my neds when her friend had groomed her over the fence, she had about a foot with no mane at all!!

I find a thinning knife a lot easier to use that a solo comb.

Thanks all that gives me some hope. I was not trying to pull it straight just thin it out, but I think the thinning has shown up more where it is uneven, where he has rubbed.

I was not trying to get any particular look just trying to thin so it does not part each way.

I think I will have a go at back combing and straightening it out with scissors.

Thanks again all :) god I hope it looks better :D

Solo combs are bl**dy awful. Try a thinning knife to just nip the ends off the longer bits. I also use one of those smart tails things to thin manes, they're fabulous. I pull tails with it as well.

Don't worry - I've seen a lot worse! At least you didn't attack it with scissors!

Have you tried pulling it the old fashioned way? Just grab the long bits (few hairs at a time), wrap round narrow mane comb and tug. Or use your solo comb on the longer bits.
