Phoenix came in from the field on Tuesday night with a kick to the underside of his face, about where the noseband sits.
I cleaned it up and it didn't look too bad, but it was quite swolen. Wednesday morning I went to check on him and the swelling had gone right down. I cleaned the wound again and still felt it was looking ok.
Yesterday morning I went to check him and the wound looked pretty gross so I called the vet out. She clippered the hair off and cleaned up around the wound and it was worse/deeper than I thought. She sedated him and took a swab, and then flushed it all out.
He's on antibiotics now and I have to flush it out twice a day with iodine, but if the infection has not significantly improved by Monday he will have to go for xrays (or before if it gets worse) as she's concerned the bone might be damaged or infected.
Poor boy
He's such an awesome patient. I was dreading having to flush it out, as when the vet did it he was sedated and it looked pretty gruesome, but he's such a good boy. Also, I have never clipped him and wasn't sure how he would be when she clipped the underside of his face (not sedated at this point).. and he never even flinched.
Fingers crossed the antibiotics clear things up over the next couple of days.
