Sorry to hear about your back pain. I also have found core work hugely helpful with my back. I did it with a personal trainer at the gym and then got trained myself. The core muscles are like a corset that supports your spine and protects it from twisting.
But Pilates with advice from a physiotherapist is probably the safest route.
