My Billy Boxer was put to sleep on Monday lunchtime. He would have been 10 next February. We had him when he was 8 weeks old.
We are all so upset, particularly my eldest daughter who is 12.
On Saturday evening he started salivating heavily and jerking his head. We took him to the emergency vet where he had a seizure. They kept him in overnight and we collected him on Sunday morning. He had not had another seizure.
At Sunday lunchtime he had another fit and then through the night 5 more. In between the big fits he was doing the head jerking and also pacing in circles and after a fit would walk into walls and furniture etc. It was awful to see him like this.
The other awful thing was that our other 2 dogs were growling and snarling at him. I guess they couldn't understand and were fearful of his beahviour. We had to keep him separate from them.
So on Monday morning we took him to our vet. She took blood tests to rule out a poison from his liver or kidneys, but this was not what it was. She suspected that it was a brain tumour because of how quickly it started. She said the head jerking was also fitting and so in reality he had been fitting constantly for 18 hours or so.
We took the decision to have him pts. He had had a very good life - if you know Boxers then you will know that to them life is a blast - one big joke. He was always happy and fun. He loved to run on the beach and sloosh face first through the water. He loved to lay in front of a log fire and burn his tummy.
We couldn't put him through the agony of trying meds that ultimately would never cure him.
We collected our daughters from school so that they could say goodbye and have one last cuddle.
After it was done we went home and took the girls out on their ponies (we rode bikes) and went for a lovely hack for about 2 hours - chatting about Billy and the silly things he did etc.
RIP Binky-boo - we love you so much and miss you so much too.
