My boy has just been diagnosed with cushings :(

i have suspected that my boy had cushings for a couple of months - called vet out and just had results that confirm he has it. Poor old boy. i have read up a lot and have a friend who's pony has had it for many years and so is a font of knowledge about it. i am hoping management and meds with help him enjoy his life. He loves to get out and about and is happiest when he is jumping (low level).

My mare was diagnosed with Cushings last year. Once you get the management right, although it depends on the horse, but generally it's pretty smooth sailing and not too much to worry about. I can highly recommend the ECIR group on Facebook (or check this link out https://www.ecirhorse.org/). They have an expert team on Cushing and Laminitis, and so much helpful information and research concerning Cushings. It's really helped me with my management of my mare.

i have one with it she is going really well on one prascend a day.
Ask your vet for a prescription to buy the prascend yourself online if they haven't suggested this already, saves alot of money!

It really doesn't have to be the end of everything. My pony had diagnosed cushings and went on to live another 8 years quite happily on one prascend tablet a day.

Mine was diagnosed at 9 and is now 19. Up until last year he was doing fun rides, hunting and loving life. You couldn't tell he had Cushings at all. This winter he didn't seem as keen, plus he started with runny poo and I have a young horse that needs riding, so I've turned him away. Still seems fine in himself.

I expect you already know, but some horses can have quite a dramatic reaction to the Prascend when they first go on it. Mine did, he appeared really depressed, didn't want to move, wouldn't eat. I honestly thought I was going to lose him. The vet took him off the Prascend for a few weeks and then reintroduced it at a quarter tablet and he never looked back.

Try not to worry. It was great when mine got diagnosed because after the meds kicked in she went back to her perky, loud and barely catchable self

I have one who's been on Prascend for 9 years now and looks great.
I thought he was doomed when he was diagnosed but he is still here & still causing trouble

I think though as it is a banned drug, is is the end of any affiliated competing. And the end of any unaffiliated competitions that adopt affiliated rules.

Pergolide is cheaper now. It comes in a box of 200 rather than 160 and is the same.

I have two very happy ponies with Cushings!

Try not to worry. I’ve got one who’s carefully managed and medicated but (touch wood) seems happy and thriving. He’s still a little menace!

My 29 year old was on prascacend. Half a tablet. It was awful. Depressed appetite. And liquid lava poo. I took him off the tablets in the end. He went back to normal. And died of a heart attack years later.
