I cannot believe how perfectly symmetrical his feet are they are absolutely stunning and I want to be sad and take photos haha. The farrier is brilliant and he thinks they are rock solid and talked me through everything so fingers crossed he copes for a while. We have had so much remedial work to do this year they are the best I have ever seen them. We rode him in the indoor arena and he was fine so I hope he will be ok on the road this week. Any tips gratefully received for how to keep them in such good condition whilst barefoot

Biggest tip I have is:

Diet, diet, diet.

Get the diet right and you'll be laughing. Did your farrier talk to you about the correct diet? If not the basics are cut out as much sugar as you can - zero mollasses, no carrots, watch the grass intake (how much depends on the individual horse, going from some who cannot tolerate grass at all to those lukcy ones who seem to have constitutions made of iron), add the right supplements (particularly magnesium oxide).

Join the forum at http://uknhcp.myfastforum.org/

Loads of great info on there and we're very friendly so ask any questions you want.

And don't think you're sad wanting to take photos of his feet - we all do it. The barefoot hoof is a thing of beauty and something to be proud of!

I remember how excited I was when my girls shoes came off!

As for tips on keeping them in good condition, just get the farrier to check them regularly, make sure the horse has dry standing in the winter months and they don't dry out in summer (so basically the same as a shod horse) I would be walking out on tarmac for a few week before trying to hack but it depends on the horse.

thanks everyone i am taking all the advice from you and going to check out that forum - damn it about the no carrots cos i just bought an 8kg bag
