He sounds like a true character, I'm so sorry you lost him Cayla.
Although I understand that you wonder if it is your fault somehow, if he was between 25-30 years old then maybe it simply was his time to leave. Had you not changed anything the last days, you would probably wonder about something else that somehow put the blame of his death on yourself. I know that is what I do anyway, in such situations.
