Moved my boy into a temporary field 2 months ago - am in the process of backing him and this field is in the forest, so ideal for getting him going on the forest tracks...was checking over his foal field-mate (who is not mine, nor is her 3 yo sister) the other day as she was a bit lame and noticed she is infested with eggs, presumed lice...so treated all 3 of them with louse powder...the foal and sister mare have bald patches on neck and face...now my boy has started with a bald rub on his nasal bones and quite a big one under his mane...:(:(:(
So am wondering now whether its more than just lice...the mare is a dun, and her coat seems to change every day but I can't really judge how much of it is winter coat loss or very bad baldness...I've also noticed her rubbing her bottom a lot. Neither of the others are doing so.
Clearly I'm gutted, and now plan to move him to my own field earlier than originally planned...once I know that whatever he's picked up is treated, so he can't pass it on to my others...question is, am now not exactly sure whether to just continue treating for lice, but with something more than just powder (suggestions?)...or treat for lice and pinworms (due to itchy-bot mare) - or should I get them looked at for mange...?? His bald patch under his mane is actually skin, not just balded fur...I've only seen that tonight.
:confused::confused::confused:

lice will cause the balding of face and neck where they rub, and may be the cause of the bottom rubbing too.

i never use louse powder- i think it is messy and innefective. i use flypor (licenced for cattle) or known as permethrin if comming from the vet.

wear gloves to apply. use 40 mls per horse. i use 20 mls from poll to withers, splitting the mane to make sure the liquid makes good contact with the skin. then the other 20 mls along spine from withers to top of tail.

repeat this in two weeks.

some people use spot on (cattle pour on) but it has been knows to cause hypersensitivity, and burn horses, so we always stick to flypor.

ets: apply on a dry day!! ;)

wouldn't be surprised if it is just lice. with the warm weather followed by a cold snap they have come out in force, we have had to do all of ours this week.

Um, sorry to state the obvious, but if the other horses in the field don't belong to you then who the heck does own them????

Because if they're in this sort of state - and no-one seems to be doing anything about it, then there is a welfare issue and the owner should take responsibility for them PDQ.

Do you know the owner OP? Does anyone??? Because if it was me I'd be getting on to WHW or someone PDQ.

Thanks for that, I do think it probably is just lice but have over-researched and now convinced myself its fifty million other things as well - and what would the vet actually prescribe then if I didn't magically own some cattle...?? Or is flypor one of those you can get from farm shops..?

Yes I know who the owner is, yes I have raised the issue several times and am consequently currently treating them all, not just because it would be pointless to do my boy alone, but also because I cannot bear to leave the others untreated...am happy to discuss this aspect via PM if need be...
