Set off from Yorkshire on Thursday afternoon and arrived at YHL around 5pm. The journey was OK if a bit windy! Settled the boy into his temporary stabling with enough hay to last a life time let alone a night and left him to it.

Up early on Friday morning and took him to the Horsewear Ireland Arena to prepare him for the lesson at lunch time. Usually a laid back guy he was a bit tense and eyes on stalks. He didn't seem to appreciate having to wait for the dressage to music horses practising their routine and kept swishing his bottom round towards them when they passed us hiding in the corner trying to keep out their way! Briefly met No Faulter from here - sorry I didn't get a chance to say much more than hello!

I had 3½ hours to wait until the lesson and my friend and I tried to distract ourselves with shopping, but it wasn't really working for me - the purchase of a new gilet to wear in the lesson and a pair of gloves, doesn't really sum up the potential shopping experience I could have had - put it down to pre-show nerves!

OH who couldn't make it due to prior work commitments rang me to tell me he was sitting in the arena waiting to watch the lesson - what a lovely surprise! Got Ludo ready and boy was he excited and tense and nervous and gittery and wouldn't stand still! Met Chris Bartle outside the arena and had a quick chat with him. He asked what I wanted to cover in the lesson and I said to have a calmer horse at events (he does get tense over his back for dressage) and also to lift him off his forehand.

The lesson was totally brilliant and hurt my brain a bit

! He had us doing lots of outside rein work and turning properly, trot and canter circles inside a 12m square box made up of 4 poles as well as doing very small circles around a jump wing in the centre of the squqre to make Ludo really have to step underneath him. CB taught me a new way asking for canter which was quite hilarious the way he described how he used to pretend to be a horse as kid and canter around the nursery! It's a bit of a visual tip and hard to explain here, but it worked! Ludo was such a superstar, he settled into really well and worked very hard, he was dripping with sweat afterwards, but I was so proud of him and he didn't flinch at all when the audience clapped at the end. I was also riding with my hands much higher and my own body position was much straighter and upright too.

After it was finished and I was buying a sandwich 2 girls came up to me and said they’d watched the lesson and really enjoyed it. I was a really pleased, if a little embarrassed LOL

It was a wonderful experience and I learnt so much. Not sure what the OH did with the camera but he got tons of really blurry pictures. Here’s the best of a very bad bunch! Well done if you've made to the end! Cheers

Having a chat with CB at the start of the lesson:

I went to a Chris Bartle lecture last year in fact the one MDM was riding in and he did very similar work. I really liked his philosophies and the horses all seemed to improve very quickly. I would love a lesson with him so think you are very lucky!! Glad you really benefitted from it and what an incredibly nerve wracking lesson!!

Well done ,that arena is tiny. We watched the dressage to music in there late this afternoon ,which was lovely.I wish I could have seen your lesson ,it sounds like you learnt a lot.
Well done you

lol - I used to have lessons with Chris and he ALWAYS (without fail) demonstrated flying changes etc by cantering himself around the arena.

He's very good at using body language to control the horse.

I found him a great teacher too - glad you and horsey (who is lush btw) had a good time!

Thought I would reply to my other post here as you're more likely to see it here.

The training is going really well thanks, im really enjoying it. I was planning a competition with Gin but she got herself out of that one.

So if your doing anything then im more than happy to come and help out. Ive dragged Hec out of the field to ride, the poor boy thought he'd been retired.

i love chris bartle! he makes so much sense, i saw a demo of his last year and it was like hearing a gospel or something. i know what you mean about the cantering like a kid thing by the way!

Sounds like a really brill lesson, and I am so glad to hear that Ludo is fighting fit and out at parties again (he spent months in a plaster cast as I recall).
Delighted that you are both enjoying yourselves again.

You and Ludo worked so hard and you looked great together. CB explains things so clearly - even a numpty like me could understand what he was saying. LOL at the new way to ask for canter and it worked!! We can't wait to get in the school and try out all the things we learnt.

Ludo looked calm and happy and you didn't look at all nervous - well done, you both did brilliant

Nice to meet you

ooo he had you in one of his squares too, have to say thats one of the most helpful things i've learnt and it was him that taught me!!

Glad you enjoyed it!

Hi and good to meet you both too! Sorry I was a bit dumb struck and didn't have much of a convo with you both, my brain was still spinning with everything - still is if truth be known! I gave Ludo the day off yesterday and only took him out for a gentle hack this morning so still haven't had a chance yet to try out what we learned again at home.

Let me know how you get on too, I might need to ask you to remind me of a few things I'm not sure I've been able to retain it all!!

Thank you Fiona it was really good fun. It's also shown me that I've been too soft on Ludo over this year compensating with his injury and that he's more than capable enough of doing some good, solid work. Just got to translate everything I learnt back in the school at home!

Thoroughly enjoyed watching your lesson, Chris Bartle makes soo much sense. I put into practise asking for the canter his way and WAHAY no incorrect lead
