I'm new to all this but thought I'd share the news!!
My Crypt had no testicles in his scrotum (one was felt up above)....
Anyway vet was in yesterday, knocked him out lay him down and he was a gelding within 20minutes!!!
Totally no big deal and I've been sooooo worried about this for months and months!!!
By jings - I've got a good vet eh?!
There is hope for all colts out there with either one or two missing testicles!!!

thats great, you must be so relieved

Barney (rising 3 yo dales x GELDING!!!) is doing great - you wouldn't even know he'd just had an op.....
had another 13 colts gelded within the last 3 weeks and he is doing as well as the rest.. he's on antibiotics for a few days and bute just to make sure he's not too sore....
It is a total relief cos he's such a nice boy..... Vet was excellent with him... I'm just so chuffed

I'm almost too scared to enter in to this conversation....... are retained testicles not largely inherited??????????? Glad he's doing so well post op.

I bought Barney as a very hungry 5 month old colt...... (he's now rising 3)
He came to me along with 5 other siblings (all boys) they were all gelded last year with no problems.
I have since bought out the rest of the stud and the sire..... who can hide his 'two stones' very well (lucky thing!) on cold days! at other times they are at his hocks lol!
I'm thinking that Barney was a one off......?
He seems to be fine after his op - no swelling.....Yet!

Twisock - retained testicles in any species are definitely known to have an inherited tendency, this is one of the reasons why it is always advised that cryptorchid animals are castrated. However it does also occur sporadically.

OP - Inguinal cryptorchids seem to be a lot more common than abdominal ones, i.e. the testicle finds its way out of the abdomen but never quite makes it to the scrotum. It's amazing how many have no testicles that you can feel but once sedated or knocked out everything relaxes and you can find them high up in the groin, and they can be castrated in almost the normal way.

Abdominal testicles are a different kettle of fish which require invasive surgery (unless you have nice fancy laparoscopy kit to do it the keyhole way).

My vet had to do a big rummage inside my boy for one that even my dog would have been ashamed of. It was very small and had gone into hiding.

The moment she mentioned that she couldn't find the second one my heart skipped abeat and $ signs were flashing before my eyes!

He was a bit uncomfortable for a few days due to the bruising from the search, swelled up enormously and had to have antibiotic jabs for a week, but he soon came right and then started growing!
