My Darling Has Colic :*(

Received one of those dreaded phone calls at 1pm to say that Jack didnt look happy and was pawing in his stable and refusing to eat.

I said we'd head straight up.

As we arrived, they'd put him back on the horse walker and he clearly wasnt happy

Got him off there and walked him in hand again to avoid any further problems.

The vet arrived and said his temperature was normal, heart rate slightly raised but to be expected and the problem was with his appendix

He'd passed some droppings this morning and they looked ok and the ones he found from the rectal exam were fine.

Hes tubed him with liquid parafin and epsom salts and given him some painkillers. He said hes not at all worried but to keep checking him through tonight.

I feel like ive been hit by a truck :*( Its the first time hes had any problems since we moved to denmark and the vet on call only spoke danish so i had to wait for my fiance and staff to translate throughout.

He was fine when we left.. a million times better but im scared and stressed :*(

Vibes for Jack if there are any going spare please

None what so ever :*(

Im not happy with where he is atm as they dont get out enough. We've bought our own place and we move on the 1st of april so as soon as hes home, he can go out daily and be a horse.

The vet wasnt at all worried and said his intestines were fine so he could still pass droppings but that he needed the appendix clearing out (hence the tubing). Ive never really encountered appendix issues before i must admit

Heading back up there in an hour to check on him again and then its 9pm and midnight checks.

Oh Lord, what a worry. I dread colic and can spot it a mile off from mild belly ache to full on and it is such a worry as colic is only a symptom, not a cause. Fingers crossed it is just a belly ache, maybe he stuffed his face a bit too much. Sending lots of healing vibes and mega hugs to you hun. Hx

Yea

Im worried as hell.

The vet wasnt concerned though and thought he'd be fine. he said his symptoms were very mild and he thought the pain killers would last a good 24 hours (which he also said should keep him comfortable while his system clears).

Hes banned from any hard feed of course, but can have some haylage and a few carrots.

Still sat here shaking though :*(

Awwww so sorry to hear that, hope it's just mild and he gets well soon is there someone at the yard 24hrs to keep an eye on him? sending good luck wishesXXX

The grooms live on site and do late night checks. I think the last is at about 1am. However its a holiday day today so there hasnt been many people around.

Im heading up there in 30 mins to see how he is. Then going to do a check at 9pm and midnight as the vet asked.

All the staff know that hes ill (they live together in a house onsite), so they've promised me they'll keep an eye on him.

It just really upsets me because ive been telling him to just hang on as we're all moving soon and he'll have his own fields and now hes ill just before we move :*(

Such a pain for him to get ill so close to moving. My mare had mild colic symptoms in October (moved onto new grass and stuffed herself stupid!) and I was so worried about her, I can totally sympathise. She received the same treatment- tubed, painkillers etc. The 1am night check was not so much fun!

Good luck with the checks this evening, I'm sure he's feeling much better already.

He looked a thousand times better when we left. We walked him before the vet got there and i was really having to drag him and he was making it quite clear he'd prefer to be layed down. He was also really quiet.. my horse is very spooky and he just wasnt

The vet asked us to walk him for 20 minutes before putting him to bed after he left and he was walking out properly and actually keeping up with us and nudging us. He was also snorting at things when he got back in his stable which is much more my horse.

Its so scarey when you cant understand what the vet is saying though :|

Big hugs for you and vibes for him - maybe the appendix thing was a "lost in translation" - would really doubt you could clear an appendix but will stand corrected

Just got back from seeing him and he looks much better. His bed directly behind his door looked disrupted as though he may have been pawing. However, thinking about it, he always says "please" at dinner time and since he wasnt getting any, its feasible that the marks are from this.

I walked him for another 20 minutes and he was walking fine without me needing to drag him (until the end where i think he was just getting bored and pissed off tbh).

I then stayed with him for about 45 minutes, just watching him. Hes passed no droppings although hes drunk quite a bit. He seemed bright and alert and had some carrots (at the request of the vet). By the time i left, he was frisking me for carrots but its only about 6 hours after his painkillers so im guessing he could still be under the influence of those.

Im heading back to check on him at around midnight.

Regarding the "lost in translation thing" - partly correct. The vet (i believe) was refering to the caecum area of the stomach. He said there was plenty of noise coming from his lower stomach area (the large intestine area), but less in the upper area (which he referred to as the appendix).

So far, so good i think. The midnight check will probably be interesting since that will be about 10 hours after he was giving the painkillers and was tubed. If hes ok then i think i'll start to relax a bit more. I wish he'd poo though! :*(

Im so pleased he is improving, and so are you by the sound of it

I've got a good feeling that this is a one-off and you will sleep soundly tonight. Once you are all together in your own place - you wont look back! Still sending healing vibes hun. Hx

Thanks

Hes not had colic in the four years ive had him so its worrying me a bit but he did look 100% better and i know that if id just been to check on him on a normal day and seen him as he was, i would never have thought anything was wrong.

Id still really like him to poo though :|
