Dear All

Again, a million billion gazillion thank yous for all the lovely words of support and advice you've given me over the last couple of weeks.

For anyone who doesn't know, my Darling Raff broke his leg 2 weeks ago. We're not 100% sure how it happened, but it looks like it was an unlucky kick in the field. That was the only bit of bad luck though, because from that moment on, someone somewhere has been looking out for us.

He was found within minutes of it happening, so hadn't tried to move on it. My lovely, lovely friends managed to get him into the yard on 3 legs (had to practically carry him). And they rang the vet who was there within minutes. I was unaware of this until the darling Kerilli knocked on my door and announced she was taking me to the yard. i had no idea why, but got in the car with her, chatted away, wondering why she was acting strangely.

we got to the yard, and Kerilli drove through the wrong gate, over the YO's garden and right up to the stables... i was starting to worry slightly by this point... and then i saw my friend Liz's face. and realised things must be bad.

He'd broken his radius, up at the top near the joint. He was stood peacefully and quietly. I've since found out that everyone had worked out it was broken, and thought he'd be pts. but, bless them, they all stayed really positive and kept me as chilled out as it was possible to be.

As he's such a lovely, gentle, laid back little soul, he's quite content with being cross tied. He'll be cross tied for at least 3 months. but we're all feeling much more hopeful now.

I genuinely can't imagine any other horse i've ever known standing there so peacefully. We have to bring him out for xrays, and he's just still Raff. walks slowly on a loose lead rein and stands still for the xrays. he's one in a billion. he really is.

as he's starting to weight bear on the broken leg, it means the risk of laminitis in the other one is reducing daily, which was another big worry. he's having ad lib (very) soaked hay, and a handful of hifi lite with laminaze 3 times a day just to break his day up.

the most recent xrays show new bone growth, so it's healing. and if he makes it though the cross tying/box rest etc, his bone should be even stronger than before.

here are some photos for you all.

the day after the accident, feeling a bit sorry for himself. half donkey, half broken horse, 100% amazing eh?

without meaning for this to turn into some kind of tearful oscars speech, i do need to thank some HHOers...

Scally - for saving his life. I can never ever ever repay you. although nick is attempting to, with his lawn art work... :D
Dobbin27 - for being so fabby and supportive and lending me her horsey til Raff is fixed.
Kerilli - for thinking of us all the time, and getting me to him on the night. and for all her advice.
Joeanne - for your lovely kind messages.

Oh, and here's an update on ME... yesterday i JUMPED for the first time in 16years. Raff's injury has made me realise how much time i have wasted being such a wuss and i regularly kick myself for wasting so many opportunities when i could have been riding him. so, i'm now even more determined to fight my fear so when he's fixed, we'll be a good little team...

good news all round me thinks? :D

What a lovely update. Fingers crossed he stays on the mend and you are very lucky to have such good friends

I am SO glad he is settling in to being cross tied!! That is fantastic news and I hope he continues to be a model patient!

He does have a gorgeous face, very handsome chap!

Isnt he the little superstar.....and you, you dark horse...jumping???
VERY proud of both of you!!

yes, ME, JUMPING! i know.
my friend is lending me her (lovely) section d whilst raff is off, in the hope i take him to camp etc. i was riding him round the school yesterday, trying to get used to him and my eil friends put a jump up whilst i wasn't looking and made me do it. it was FAB. i didn't fall off or anything... woo! x

I'm so pleased to hear he's doing well, and that you are too. It sounds like you have an amazing horse & a fantastic bunch of friends.

Thank you for the update, wonder most days how you two are doing. Glad you have such a dream team behind you both and that Raff himself is being such a superstar patient!

What an encouraging update, he sounds as if he is being a model patient. Our pony had a fracture of her tibia several years ago and although she was a nightmare while cross tied she made a full recovery. She is now 22 and winning veteran classes.:)

Aw that brought a little tear to my eye, such a lovely post. You and Raff are an amazing team, i'm sure you being such a fab mum to him is majorly contributing to his calm attitude. So glad to hear he is doing well, and that you are too. Keep us updated. I can't wait for the one in 3 months time which says he is all mended and allowed out for walkies. xx

Fantastic news!! I had been wondering. Here's hoping the rest of his recovery goes as well as it has so far. Love his two-tone ears!!

What a great update! I admit I don't know Raff but I am pleased that he is on the way to recovering and that you both have so much love and support to get you through this.

Aw, that is good news! So glad it looks like he'll make a full recovery. Can't imagine what I'd do if my boy had to endure what Raff is atm, you must feel like you've been on one hell of an emotional rollercoaster.

Here's to Raff, and everyone who's helped you :D

So pleased its all going well for you! What an absolute star of a horse is Raff?! And what fab friends you've got. He has the kindest face and looks like he's coping brilliantly. Hope everything continues in this manner - you and Raff will be whizzing round before you know it!!
xxx

Fab news about Raff! Hope he keeps mending and is back to 'normal' in no time. Big hugs for him from me! :):):)

When the nettles and cow parsley start growing chop some down for him to munch on - and cleavers - all are really good for the blood/prevention on lami and will mean he can have a bit of green to brighten his day - i used to do that for mine when on box rest for 5 months - brightens thier day!!:D

And as for you jumping:eek::eek::eek: - you go girl!!:D:D:D Get yourself to camp and then you will be ready for your boy when he is all well again.:D

That's brought a tear to my eye reading that - I am thrilled that he's making a good recovery and will keep everything crossed - I didn't realise that you'd moved him on to another yard, I thought he was still at home - Good for you for keeping yourself riding too and well done on the jumping front - fab stuff! :)

we had only gone to a yard down the road for a couple of weeks whilst i brought him back into work - cos they have fab facilities and i'd have had company to hack out with etc.... luckily the YO is amazing, and doesn't mind the fact she's lumped with us on box rest for months! we were only meant to be grass livery... but absolutely can't move him now cos he wouldn't be able to get up a ramp etc :o i've been so lucky to have been surrounded by such fabby people. :)

how's your new horsey settling in? x

He sounds amazing and I'm so pleased he's coping and healing well. Look forward to your next update. :)

Well done you for jumping after such a long time :D
