Dear All
Again, a million billion gazillion thank yous for all the lovely words of support and advice you've given me over the last couple of weeks.
For anyone who doesn't know, my Darling Raff broke his leg 2 weeks ago. We're not 100% sure how it happened, but it looks like it was an unlucky kick in the field. That was the only bit of bad luck though, because from that moment on, someone somewhere has been looking out for us.
He was found within minutes of it happening, so hadn't tried to move on it. My lovely, lovely friends managed to get him into the yard on 3 legs (had to practically carry him). And they rang the vet who was there within minutes. I was unaware of this until the darling Kerilli knocked on my door and announced she was taking me to the yard. i had no idea why, but got in the car with her, chatted away, wondering why she was acting strangely.
we got to the yard, and Kerilli drove through the wrong gate, over the YO's garden and right up to the stables... i was starting to worry slightly by this point... and then i saw my friend Liz's face. and realised things must be bad.
He'd broken his radius, up at the top near the joint. He was stood peacefully and quietly. I've since found out that everyone had worked out it was broken, and thought he'd be pts. but, bless them, they all stayed really positive and kept me as chilled out as it was possible to be.
As he's such a lovely, gentle, laid back little soul, he's quite content with being cross tied. He'll be cross tied for at least 3 months. but we're all feeling much more hopeful now.
I genuinely can't imagine any other horse i've ever known standing there so peacefully. We have to bring him out for xrays, and he's just still Raff. walks slowly on a loose lead rein and stands still for the xrays. he's one in a billion. he really is.
as he's starting to weight bear on the broken leg, it means the risk of laminitis in the other one is reducing daily, which was another big worry. he's having ad lib (very) soaked hay, and a handful of hifi lite with laminaze 3 times a day just to break his day up.
the most recent xrays show new bone growth, so it's healing. and if he makes it though the cross tying/box rest etc, his bone should be even stronger than before.
here are some photos for you all.
the day after the accident, feeling a bit sorry for himself. half donkey, half broken horse, 100% amazing eh?
day 8, feeling much more settled, but dropping weight
day 12, smiling. as always.
without meaning for this to turn into some kind of tearful oscars speech, i do need to thank some HHOers...
Scally - for saving his life. I can never ever ever repay you. although nick is attempting to, with his lawn art work...
Dobbin27 - for being so fabby and supportive and lending me her horsey til Raff is fixed.
Kerilli - for thinking of us all the time, and getting me to him on the night. and for all her advice.
Joeanne - for your lovely kind messages.
Oh, and here's an update on ME... yesterday i JUMPED for the first time in 16years. Raff's injury has made me realise how much time i have wasted being such a wuss and i regularly kick myself for wasting so many opportunities when i could have been riding him. so, i'm now even more determined to fight my fear so when he's fixed, we'll be a good little team...
good news all round me thinks?
