My darling Raff, an update for y'all :)

I am so glad he is doing well. What a little angel he is.

Also, as I've *touch wood* never had to cross tie a horse, how do you muck him out? Or get in and out the stable? Is he allowed to move at all?

And well done for jumping :) :) :)

mucking out is easy peasy cos it's all in one pile. to save harrassing him too much, i'm deep littering him so i don't need to faff too much. i just get the poo out, any wet that's on top and put clean down. he's on wood pellets. but for the first day was on straw until we could get his wood pellets down. getting a whole bed of straw out and the pellets in was not much fun...

during the day he has his door open, and just a chain up, so i whizz the wheelbarrow through (trying not to clonk into his bad leg...) and whack all the plop into it. then i just skip him out during the day whenever i see any muck around.

he's not allowed to lie down, or twist his leg at all. so his cross ties are short enough for him to reach his haynet and that's it. if he were to lie down, the strain on his leg when he got up could snap it. he can take one step back, so sometimes to stretch you'll see him take a step back then forward again. but that's it.

please don't think i'm being cruel. someone today said to me 'ignore what other people are saying, as long as YOU think you're doing the right thing by him...' which really upset me. i think some people have been talking and think i should have pts. can i really point out that he isn't bothered in the slightest about being cross tied. if i thought he was stressed, or unhappy, i wouldn't put him through it. he's perfectly happy as long as he has a haynet. he's checked regularly. he's in a stable where he can see the world. he hasn't even fidgeted properly yet. i think he knows he's safe and well looked after. in the wild he'd have laid down and been eaten by predators.

and i'm going to make sure his life after cross tying is SO much fun that these months will be such an insignificant part of his life. :D

So pleased to hear he is doing so well, bless him he sounds like an amazing fella! :) Glad you are also starting to jump again! well done you :D

CCP - thats great news he's on the mend, this is exactly how Risky was and he has now started popping small jusmps. Well done you for being so brave and positive and huge horsey hugs for the wonderful Raff xxx

Losing weight = less chance of laminitis = good. He looks perfectly happy to me and after this short period of boxrest, to which he seems quite adjusted, he has a normal life to look forward to. The issues begin when future quality of life is poor to none and the horse is being kept alive for no purpose other than to satisfy the owner who doesn't want to say goodbye.

My goodness I have totally missed this whole thing! I'm so so sorry for poor Raff... bless him... cross tied for 3 months is tough... he is such a superstar for being so calm and quiet... and well done you for staying strong..... a million (((vibes))) for him....xx

--- just to clarify---

i realise that by saying he'd been kicked in the field, that it might sound like someone, somewhere is to blame. but really it was just one of life's accidents.

he was turned out with three of his friends. all four horses were unshod. they were friends, happy and no problems at all. the chances are, it wasn't a hard/bad kick. it didn't break the skin or even leave a bump. it just landed in an unlucky place. the horses don't fight, they have a play sometimes, but nothing nasty.

horses are animals at the end of the day, and i really am not looking to blame anyone. i turned him out with the horses because i know and trust them myself. not at any point have i looked to blame anyone, nor do i want to. because it was an accident.

thank you all very much for thinking of me, and caring enough to feel protective over me, but there is really no need! :)

PMSL Lawn art that is totally a new name, if I didnt know him better I would swear he was drinking doing it, maybe I ought to open it up to the public to make money.

I think actually at the moment I am the lucky one, with a yard full of great liveries, which is a really happy friendly place, where everyone works as a team and supports each other.

We are 1/6th of the way there yesterday, and I think the comment made that upset you so much today was said without thought, he does have a quality of life even in his little adapted stable, he sees the outside world all day, that is busy with lots for him too watch and feels the warmth of the sun shining on him, with his feeds held for him, hay on demand and as much love as he can cope with.

Ohh and to the nasty little person that sent me a PM, that i am a bad YO, Raff was seperated for four days before he went into the field with the three others but they could talk over the fence and meet each other, none are shod behind, Raff is totally the boss in the field, and he was found within minutes of this happening as my horses do have genuine 24hr care a day, as Raff will verify when woken from his beauty sleep at 3am every night. No Ploppy does not deserve this, and quite frankly I would prefer it was one of mine rather than Raff, but sometimes these things happen for a reason, and accidents do happen they are horses at the end of the day.

Clipcloppop - as usual I am very late into this thread but just wanted to say that I wish Raff a very speedy recovery and what a lucky boy he is. xx

So sorry to hear about your pony - and i hope the months fly past - ime on box rest myself and so far it isnt too bad - and if you have a good yard around you they help to break up the day for them!

Keep us all posted and dont you just wish you could lay them on a sofa, with a box of carrots and the racing post and say "badminton is on x channel if you want to watch that" and i have just ordered you the Champion series on DVD - do you want your tail "up or down today" ?

Eh? *scratches head* someone sent you a pm denoting your abilities as a Y.O?
Lowlife.
The fact that Raff WAS recieving 24 hour care/supervision is probably why CCP still has Raff!
Pops, if you are happy with Raff, the vet is happy with Raff, and Raff is happy within himself, tell whoever to stick it up thier a**e, he is YOUR boy, and you will do whatever you see fit!

So glad he's on the mend... he's lucky to have such a lovely Mum and you are lucky to have such a lovely yard and bunch of friends!!!

Everything crossed for a speedy recovery and the silver lining is the jumping and realisations you've come to - thats incredibly brave and broought a tear to my eye - to look for the good and move forwards shows incredible strength!!! Massive well done!!

xx

Sending <<<healing vibes>>> for Raff.

He certainly looks content enough doesn't he. All his needs met, laid on entertainment and lots of fuss. What more he could want :p

CPP if I were you I would ignore those who say he's unhappy etc. He is your horse and I am 110% sure if he were unhappy then he would let you know it and you would rethink his care accordingly.

Good luck with the rest of Raff's recovery. Look forward to more updates as the weeks go by

i think the person that hinted i should have PTS was basing it on how they thought their horse would cope. the same person actually asked if raff was sedated because he was so calm and content when they saw him. he hasn't been sedated, and i genuinely think he's perfectly happy. in fact he is probably looking at today's horizontal rain and laughing at all his field mates, whilst having his feed bucket held up for him to eat out of, and his bum scratched, and his poo picked up before it even hits the floor...

people are very quick to judge... i'm sure the same people would be saying something if i did have him pts whilst there was still a chance of a positive outcome...

at the end of the day, i've still got my delightful little Raff, and for that i feel so very blessed, so people can say what they like.

now, i'm just going to get really brave, and really fit, and then we're going to take over the world. well, maybe the very small local show's minimus clear round course... ;)

Haven't read all the posts but my bosses horse got kicked and broke a similar bone and has just completed a full seasons hunting, so you go Raff!

oh completely agree on this point clippy, I dont know that many people (or never used to) with their own horses, but know 2 both got fractures from kicks, both with long term field mates and both were fine afterwards, is was just one of those unfortunate things that happens sometimes with horses. I hope raff knows how many people are rooting for him :) :)

Quite how anybody could class Raff as miserable (If they see him on a daily basis!) I am not sure.. He really is a superstar!! This is Raff looking throughly miserable enjoying his new salt lick (fingers crossed my technical skills don't let me down!!)

And I think CCP may have been a little too modest with her efforts with Morgan, he has just come back from a fairly disasterous loan home and has picked up a few less desirable habits.. this is them the first day she rode him! I will ask Scally to post their action shots, it was not only the first time CCP had jumped in 16 years, I doubt he has seen as much as a pole in the last three years or jumped in maybe 7?! So she really was super brave!!

Good luck to you and Raff,, I hope his recovery is the best it could possibly be.

Accidents just happen as you say, we can't prevent everything. You sound very level headed and he's lucky to have you.

I have been away and missed this, I'm so sorry to hear poor Raff is injured. Lots of vibes coming his way and I'm sure with your care he will come right.
