Hi there.

I need some advice please. I have 5 dogs, two elderly Dalmations and 3 Jack Russells. One of my Dallys is almost 12 years old and has always had a wee bit of fear agression. Once in a blue moon if one of the Jacks was annoying him he would suddenly grab them and shake them, awful I know. The other week in my absence (my lodger saw it happen) he grabbed my little female jack for no reason whatsoever. Several stitches and a loss of £160 she is now fine. Last night whilst at the vets having her stitches out he grabbed the youngest and did the same fortunately causing distress but no damage. He attempted to grab one of them the other day as well but I stopped him.

Has anyone got any idea why he's suddenly doing this on a regular basis.

Other than keeping the Dallys away from the Jacks whilst out at work, etc (which I've already done) I dont know what to do!

Someone else on another forum mentioned that their dog began attacking people because it had gone senile.

I was asked if my dog was in pain because he was suddenly aggressive (again, slightly fear aggressive)

All you can do is get him checked for pain, keep him separate as you're doing and hope he doesn't harm the JRTs. :(

I wonder if he's become intolerant of the JRTs? I know my older dog gets fed upon the youngsters annoying him.

I think a visit to the vet to rule out pain etc but suspect failing eyesight & senility is the root cause.

I would definately keep him separate from your JRs as they may upset and wind him up and to stop any further accidents.

We used to have a Dalmation and she lived to be 15, so 12 is quite elderly and I could understand an old dog getting bad tempered with a nuisance! We also had a very old collie that spent a good deal of the day sleeping when he got old and once a young child was visiting and despite warning his father not to let him near the dog, went to give it a hug and the dog snapped at him because he was startled. Luckily the parents took the blame.
