My dog is acting really weirdly, bit concerned

She’s 12.5 years old but completely fit and healthy. Border collie bitch, I’ve had her coming up 3 years.
I got home from work and she was lying in the garden by the gate, she often waits here for me to come home. (O/h was home so the back door was open)
She didn’t come to see me and he said when I came in that she’d been lying there for ages.
I called her in and gave her a treat which she ate but very defensively which isn’t usual.
She then went upstairs, dogs are not allowed upstairs and to be fair she’s never even tried before. I found her hidden in some washing I’d been sorting earlier.
She’s submissive and seems frightened, can’t see anything physically wrong.
I’ve just tried to bring her down for her dinner but she won’t come with me. It’s like she wants too but is too scared.
So she’s heard the others have dinner and is still hiding upstairs (this dog is the biggest pig ever)
I’m going to try and take her for a quick walk but am a bit worried. :(
 
that sounds odd, could she have had a fit and OH didnt notice. when my lurcher had a fit she was a bit strange afterwards and seemed scared, luckily i was there and just cuddled her till she calmed down... they are such a worry, hope she calms down when you walk her. good luck
 
Sorry but something is definitely not right there - but it might be something as mild as a stomach upset or similar? Personally I wouldn't bother with a walk, just see if you can encourage her to be with you a bit? Not much to go on at the moment, I would look out for vomiting/diarrhoea/signs of discomfort such as panting & being unsettled - it is hard to describe on a forum, but I think if you are very concerned then a call to the vet wouldn't be amiss?

I don't want to worry you unnecessarily, so I apologise for being concerned too, but she clearly isn't her usual self
 
I wouldn't walk a dog that was wanting to hide. I should think it would be very stressful for the dog. It does sound as if there has been an 'episode' of some kind which your OH missed. I would keep her very quiet tonight and take her to the vet tomorrow.
 
THe walk idea was just to try and cheer her up. We managed to talk her into coming downstairs and she came out onto the yard for a few minutes during which she caught her ball a few times, she found one and brought it to me.
Since she has eaten and stayed downstairs with us. She seems much more herself now.
Coaxing her downstairs took a bit of doing. She got a bit like this when we had a massive thunderstorm but it’s a nice calm day today so nothing like that.
 
That definitely sounds like the aftermath of a fit, or stroke. I have had dogs who have had each of those and they are quiet and subdued afterwards. The Lab who had a stroke was obviously walking with a list to one side. The one who was epileptic always wanted to sleep after a seizure but she was used to them, she had been epileptic since 18 months and she lived to be almost 15.

That sounds much more positive, I am really pleased for you both :) For her to be interested in her ball, AND find another one to bring to you, sounds very much getting back to normal :) Fingers crossed she carries on like this, I am sure she will - keep us posted :)

It could have been something as simple as a noise that scared her. My sisters dog hides when he’s in pain, he’s a total wimp too so it can be anything from an upset stomach to when he dislocated his leg! It makes diagnosis of what’s up very difficult.
 
my epileptic dog would be very confused after a seizure-very clingy and fearful although it didn't last long, after a few minutes she would snap out of it and be her normal self-shortly followed by a deep sleep.
glad she's doing better :)
 
Today she’s completely 100% back to normal. I was all set for a vet check this afternoon but I didn’t bother.
The old bird is back to her usual ball obsessed noisy self :)
 
Might have been something weird outside. One of mine has decided he’s scared of the wind and climbed on a chair, strictly not allowed. Glad she’s back to normal.
