So, the hound's tail stopped working on sunday - it was hanging quite limply although she wasn't bothered by it. This has happened once before and the vet who treated her emptied her anal glands, gave her an anti-inflammatory injection and all was fixed.

So, off I trotted to the vet on monday and asked for the same again - she checked the glands and emptied them (they stink so bad!!!) but she said they were only about half full. Couldn't give the anti-inflammatory as she was having her innoculations as well.

But the vet also asked if the dogs had been swimming recently, we went to the lakes on saturday so of course they had to have a dip!! She couldn't tell me why but did say that sometimes swimming can cause them to have tail issues - has anyone heard this before?

Tail is now fully functioning again and knocking stuff off the coffee table!!

My firends dalmatian used to suffer from this - my friend called it 'swimmers tail' as it would usually happen after she had been swimming, although it could just happen if she had been particularly 'waggy'! It used to right itself in a day or two.

ditto above = happens to our workers - goes away after a few days

My first dog (a golden retriever) used to suffer this too.
However, I don't want to worry you, but my Lab had similar symptoms and it turned out she had broken her tail. She had about 2 inches amputated.
She fully recovered very quickly and it has had no adverse effects.

Ah, I see!!

I was just a bit perplexed as she goes swimming fairly regularly - at least once a week - and in 5 years this has only happened twice.

Thanks all.
