Last night whilst fumbling about in the dark trying to wash B's leg wound out I managed to drop and then step on and crack my only syringe. Cue me standing outside the chemist's at 8.30 this morning, only to find it didn't open until 9. I usually get to the yard at 7.30-8.00 so I was worried about how late I was and it was bloody freezing standing about on the street but I thought I'd best wait for it to open as I had nothing else to properly wash the wound with (she won't let me wipe it with cotton wool so I need to squirt it from a safe distance

A nice lady joined me outside the shop and introduced herself as the district nurse. Apparently someone should have been there early to let her in but it was all locked up and dark inside so she had to wait too. We had a chat about the weather and remarked on how cold it was to be standing outside waiting. I replied 'Yes, it is isn't it? I only wanted a syringe to clean my horses wound out, I'd have been in and out in a second!'

No sooner had I said it then she dashed off to her car which was parked a little way down the street and came back with a fistful of sterile syringes

She refused to take any money ('They're on the NHS, sweetheart') and wished my horse the best of luck and hoped she got well soon

I was beyond pleased and couldn't thank her enough, but she was adamant that it was nothing and she was only too pleased to help. How refreshing to hear is that?

I think I'll drop in later and leave a little box of chocs for her to pick up next time she's in

How kind

Glad the syringe cleaning is working, if you are using salt water as well that will heal it quicker too

Yup, mild salt solution with a drop of aloe vera as recommended by vet.

Syringing it has the advantage of being able to shoot out any bits in there at high pressure, rather than trying to swab them out with cotton wool and having my head kicked in in the process
