Noticed that one of the nails on my TBs crappy front hoof was not particularly secure today. Hacked him out, and when I got back it had worked it's way loose. Managed to remove the offending nail so it would not cause any damage, but being the one nearest the heel, I could see as he was walking that the shoe was lifting away slightly & putting strain on the other 2 nails on that side. So at 6pm I left a message on the answerphone at the forge asking for advice. My farrier called me back at 7:30pm, and said he will come & fix tomorrow morning between 8 & 9am before he goes to the Kent Show.

I feel so lucky as my previous farrier used to refuse to come out except for scheduled shoeing which is a problem as my gelding has very bad hooves. This is not the first time my current farrier has gone above & beyond the call of duty - he once came out within 15 minutes for a suspected hoof abscess, then called me on the Sunday to ask how the horse was doing. I guess I should carry on providing the luxury snacks & treats when he comes out - must be paying off!

He is obviously so much better from your previous farrier but he is not really goind above & beyond. Most farriers will come as soon as possible to replace a thrown shoe or sort out a loose one for you. You've obviously has to put up with a rubbish one for so long you must have forgotten that this is all part of their job & service.

As for your previous one refusing to come out except for schedules shoeing, it's a wonder he had any customers.

You are probably right! I think the same about the other farrier. He used to imply that I was over-reacting when I would worry about a loose shoe, or a deteriorating hoof. Then I used to think I must be as he was the professional so must know what he's talking about.

It is so refreshing as this one says to call immediately if I am worried about anything. He is just concerned that my horse should stay happy & sound as he saw how miserable & footsore he was when he first came up to see him (he transformed my horse after one shoeing!)

Kayleigh - mine is just the same - so willing & always happy to pop by first thing or last thing to correct any problems
