...is so fat that when I put her heavyweight on today that fit her last year it was too small around her chest. I know she's put on weight but I really didn't realize how much

So now I am not in good books with OH as I have to trawl around shops and online looking for a standard neck rug for a fat cob and so far they are all either full or half necks which really won't fit! Is anybody else screaming because they have to get new rugs?
 
Yea my OH said something along those lines but she's only on a sprinkle of pony nuts! I think she ate too much over the festive period!

i wouldnt put a hw rug on her, if she is over weight leave her with a mw/lw, but that is if she is not cold and shivering,

what breed is she and is she clipped?

I have to admit I like to pride myself on not being too fussy (if that makes sense) but today it was so cold my fingers hurt and she wasn't warm in her mw so after umming and arring thinking about how cold she MAY be tonight the rug came out. Fortunately for her she probably didnt need the hw so its probably a good job it didn't fit. She's a Sec D X and is clipped. I don't like not having the option of putting the hw on though

Loobiloo - I have exactly the same problem. I blame my YO for having such a nice yard and such happy horses! In my previous yard, my veteran cob had lost a load of weight through being banned from ANY turnout (even the couple of hours every few days that the other liveries got) coz he learned how to step over/through the sagging and lethal barbed wire fencing in the mud square aka the winter sacrifice field. Winter being September 1st to May 1st. All his buddies went out and he was left behind calling desperately. I moved. Now horsey is happy and content and ROUND. I keep telling people that its all muscle but I do get some sneering looks! Probably coz it wobbles as he walks and his ribs have disappeared. His Christmas mince pie probably didn't help. Roll on the spring when lessons and long rides beckon again. But on the PLUS side, it's been a FABULOUS excuse to get out there and by some hot new rugs! Also had to buy a new girth and a new saddle (ouch).
 
How many mince pies did you say you fed him on Christmas morning? Was that with single or double cream

My fatty pony hasnt had a rug on unless its raining and she hasnt lost any flab!! ..maybe shes preggers,..and the foal just hasnt come out in two years! *joke* shes ok in the summer in hard work!..damm dark nights!
 
Premier equine has a sale on atm and i just saved £40 on a heavyweight 450 gram! They fit cobs really well and the winterbuster has a removeable neck cover so fits like a normal rug.
 
I wouldnt buy a new rug TBH, because that'll just let you think its ok for her to be that big if you know what I mean. She needs to go on a diet ASAP urgently if she really is "fat". You dont want a fat horse going into spring or you'll have lami to worry about!
 
Good advice.

Having a similar problem I actually buy rug chest extender pads. You can get these for some of the main rug makes. Then it becomes temporary (-in my imagination anyway

FHC is being cared for by the yard for a few days as I'm not well, so when I get back I might not need the extenders any more. They do feed him, but take less notice of those pleading hazel eyes than I do.

The OP should be careful about getting larger sized rugs as they may come up too large/deep.
 
That's what I should really do Fathairy cob...go to the Bahamas for a month and let someone else feed my horse! It is DEFO the pleading brown eyes (and soft nicker in my case) that melts my heart!
 
But you can't overfeed just because the horse is cute! Unfortunately it can constitue cruelty allowing any pet / horse to become overweight. I don't find it amusing to laugh at how fat some of you are allowing your horses to become.
 
I'm doing my best. I just feed him straw and bed him on shavings with restricted turnout. I've been fighting a twelve year battle with his weight but I reckon that he was born fat and now that he's retired due to arthritis ( a pre-existing condition prior to purchase I suspect) I can't lunge/do much exercise as he goes lame. When he worked we got him down from 540kg on arrival down to 470kg (-he looked a different animal), but now struggle to keep below 500kg.

I know, excuses, excuses ..............

Anyway I visited him today before coming home to bed (via the computer) and there are unfortunately no signs that the yard have got any weight off him yet.

Anybody know any food with even less calories than straw?
