Hey yall.. im new here, and im still ecstatic so.. im gnna tell you about it! Well, on sunday, i had my 1st canter... it was the most awesome thing i have ever done.. im in a class withy friends, id had pivate lessons, but stopped and then started up again with them... there is me, and amy - whod never ridden before.. monique - same, jess ( a 10 year old whod ridden - well sat on a horse from 3 - 6 yrs old..) and hayleyt who only came to one lesson.. anyways so i was the only one whod ever ridden before.. uhm yea well.. im 15, amy is 15, monique is 16, jess is 10, and monique was away this week.. so just me. amy and jess. oh and a new girl, who thinks she knows everything... whos about 10.. and.. we did our lesson, got swooped hundreds of times by magpie every time we went up that end of the arena! but only me since i was 1st grrrr...! anyways, after a while, he told us to stop.. he tied the ponies heads.. with bail twine, bridle to saddle... and i said t amy, omg hes gunna make us canter! ( the two 10 yr olds rode on Scout and Kate, little ponies and me and amy rode on George and Calibah) and then he took us out on a trail ride, so i figured wed be safe out there, surely hed start us on guaranteed soft landing lol.. so our instructor Gary rode on Straw.. so it was Gary and Straw, then me and George, then Amy on Calibah, then Tia ( i think) on Scout, then Jess on Kate.. so we were trotting a rising trot.. ( we get to choose which ever we want [sititng or rising] on trail ride.. we all rise usually lol) Anywyas, we were all trotting along a straight alley way sortve thing, and he yelled out to us, ok, sitting trot everyone.. now as everyone knows, when you trail ride, the horses follow one another, so the 1st horse walks, so does the next, first horse trots so does the next.. usually. Ok, so he said sitting trot, so we all were sitting.. and.. then.. Gary and straw cantered in front of me, which means i cantered which then means amy cantered.. for uno just a few seconds, i dont think the ponies actually made it to a canter even though the girls say they did. But yes, that was our first canter he did 3 lots of it before we got to the end of the alley thingy.. it was the most amazing thing ive ever done in my life, you kno, you just float with the horse, and you are at one with the horse the saddle the stirrups everything, your just one! It has got to be the coolest things ive done in my life! Oh wow.. amazing. Feels like you are flying! I do lessons every Sunday morning 10-11..am.. and yeah, but this week i am doing a half day camp.. on friday.. it starts at 8:30am... we groom horses, then do all the tacking up and stuff, then we have an hour lesson and then we have an hour trail ride.. so im doing that on friday! And then my lesson again on Sunday, so yea im so very excited! lol.. does anyone have any other suggeestions or first times to share? lol.. omg it was just so coooool! i loved it.. well bye for now!
Lauren! :
PS: i defintily prefer cantering to a sitting trot! Sitting trots usually annoy me, until.. that sunday, when i realised i loved them lol..

Oh its definitly something to look forward to! The most awesome feeling, you really do fly, my friend whod ridden ther for years said that George was the best canter there, but i think any canter that you are ready for or you kno, you chose to do ( in that its not lke my REAL first canter where the horse bolted away from train and i threw myself off thinkin that was safer - not a good experience i had no idea wht was goin on.. and cos he was scared it was just.. nothing.. terrible but yeah not reli my first canter) you will love it! Truly will! IM going for ride tomorrow so ( its 12am here in australia so technically today but not quite) will get to canter again!
good luck!
Lauren...

Im taking weekly lessons, I had a really bad instructor before that who damaged my confidence. My new instructor is amazing, has me mounted in no time and im trotting like there is no tomorrow. Before I was too scared to trot!!! Held onto the pommel for dear life!

You should be really really proud of yourself, thats a huge achievement.

The horse I ride at the min has a really bouncy canter and really beautiful big strides but her canter is hard to sit to. I also ride a wee 14.2 that has a rocky horse canter. Well rocking pony with little fast legs! Edit - forgot to say well done!!!!!!!

He tied bailer twine between bridle and saddle?! Why? I presume this is on the same pony and not between ponies

maybe a makeshift daisy rein to stop any body getting their head down or bucking

Congratulations to you it is a great experience the first time you do it, the first time I cantered outside of the menage was absolutely fab too. I had my first Gallop a few weeks ago and that really does take some beating!!

It just seems a strange thing to do to all ponies to signify that they are going to be asked to canter. I've never heard of it being done. I would have imagined that beginner's ponies would not be the type to get overexcited at having a little canter and start bucking. In fact, I would hope that any properly trained horse wouldn't start bucking when it got a bit excited.

Thank you! Uhm ok, the bail twine.. is tied like around the ring things on the mouth 'bit' (i think only certain bits have them) on either side of mouth, or if they not therre on halter.. , and on the two rings on the saddle, so goes.. one end tied to bridle, down to the bit and through there out the other side back up to the saddle. Its not about excitement, just abput more control, if the kids lost confidence im assuming because he did it today for a trail ride of city kids. So to the horse the reins should always feel right or something im not sure, but ive seen it done a fair bit.. maybe they are acting like rings? Im not sure i will investigate it for you.. im not very good at explaining so i will find a picture, draw the twine in and try and get it on here! ok?

On a positive note.. i did that half day camp today, and,... well i couldnt do a sitting trot, i bounced allllll over the place, his canter was still great but his trot was nuts! bAnd obviously, when going into canter in the arena.. it wasnt right cos i couldnt get a seat..

same horse.. but a whole different class.. he also wasnt the leader, and George is always the leader in everything, he is the instructors main horse, so leads ALL the trailrides, so not bein in front frustrates him muchly.. but.. once we got on trail... he was still trying to get in front, but my seat improved and i could do a canter properly.. but yeah serious problems sittin trot while he wasnt the leader.. and i just felt horrid.. lol.. so i will wait till sunday (today bein friday night in australia) and... we will see how we go in normal lesson conditions in that George leads everything except trail where he is second, which is almost as goood to him somehow.. but yeah.. if i dont improve, i need help, i wont blame the horse cos he is ok, and i kno he is ok, so it was me? Anyways if anyone has any good seat advce... im open! And liek i said if i dont improve on Sunday i will be beggin it of you.. my instructor is amazingly good, and an aweosme rider, this fella rides a 15metre or smaller circle in a canter no stirrups, no hands... i dont kno how normal that is but i think its pretty awesome, cos he just goes round and round, on any horse, with an occasional... nudge to keep em goin or turn em right way with his foot.. but.. yeah anyways.. any advice please? I still love cantering... its still so awesoem. We did it about.. 10 - 15 times today, in short to medium lengthed bursts from 5 metres to 50 so.. it was great!
