Hi...I am going to see a horse on Saturday.

I am going to see him via a friend but he is at a dealers yard. This is the kind of dealer that sells to other dealers and imports direct, not a dealer dealer, if that makes any sense.

So here is what I know:

3years 10 months 16.2hh bay gelding. Good paces, well put together. Make nice riding horse type. Backed 1 month and riding out. Irish out of a Master Imp mare.

So, how much would you pay? He said he is open to offers! I know what he wants, and was wondering what you thing I should be aiming at roughly?

I am not expecting the horse to be anything other than rough and ready, by the way (and he will be vetted!)

i saw a very similar horse sold last week for £3500 which i thought was expensive but it depends a great deal on the horses nature

4k easily.

You see, I think he is going to ask more than that!!? He says the horse has got potential to go and do what I want to do (bring on and do affiliated sj/dressage) and be a really good rc type horse.

When you consider dealers are selling 4year olds for £6k with similar breeding?

I just want to know what everyone else thinks as I have got to make him an offer...

I think if he is as good as he sounds then you have to find what you're comfortable with once you've seen him. You know what he wants, just see what you think.

He does sound lovely and has good breeding, if he is easy and trainable then its all pushing the price up.

Hels, according to the dealer he is really laid back and trainable. I will get a vibe when I go tomorrow....To be honest, I didnt want to know much about him on the phone, I really have heard all of the stories under the sun, including the classic line
"He is the Rolls Royce of horses that one"
so now I am going to have a look at something trainable, well put together and unspoiled.

Just not sure how much I should be thinking about paying! LOL!

oooow I hate these...only because there so hard and I'm totally rubbish at them

, as the prices vary so much.

I guess knowing the dealer and the prices he/she sells at would help but I'm going to have a wild stab in the dark....errrr

£3,000.00 tops?

Master Imp is a nice stallion, if the horse is correct in temperament and type, and has the dreaded word potential then you will be very lucky to spend anything under 3k IMO and experience!!

Thanks
To be honest it has been really bittersweet looking for horses because I don’t really want to be doing it at all! Also, to get something with the scope/talent/attitude of Bruce, I am going to have to either spend £12k + (which I don’t have) or buy something untouched, put the work in myself and either sell for a profit in Spring/Summer 2010 – and either way I am not going to be where I was at till late next summer at least

Its going to take time, and it is frustrating knowing I had just spent that time with Bruce – if that makes sense.
If I do get another horse, it is going to take a while but I am looking forward to having something to get going with and seeing its progress. I am, basically, really open, I don’t want a horse ‘to jump’ or ‘to do dressage’ I am going in with a really open mind look for something with a good head and well put together and see where his potential lies.
Its just really horrible looking, and people will try to flog you anything. I am finding it quite depressing to be honest, and I wish Bruce could come back into my life

I understand completely that is must be difficult for you - so horrible about B. I've always been lucky to have another one when i've lost one.

You seem very sensible about what you want etc and have an open mind so have fingers crossed for you tomorrow and let us know how it goes!

You say you know you're going to have to make him an offer, if you like the horse, why not start at £3.5k and move on from there?
I would agree with most of the posters, you'll be lucky to get it for less than £4k
Good Luck!

Over here, in my area, and in my line of selling, 3 year olds command the highest prices (based on amount of money/input) and this is the most desirable age. Most of my registered 3 year olds sell for, on average, 6K.

I'd put this one at around 4-5K. Irish horses always seem to make decent money and if this horse has been backed and is riding out nicely, then I think you will have to pay for this; and if it has been done sympathetically, then I think you will have a good buy there.

Id guess you are looking at 4000.
You wll know if he is worth it when you see him
My friend lost her horse in an accident recently and she bought the second horse she saw at the first place we looked at (a dealer we have known for years) He was 'rising 4' (turned out to be 3years 2months lol) and she paid 4500. Her dressage trainer thinks she got a tatal bargin as the horse has amazing paces and is so trainable plus hasnt been spolied, she was told if she fancied selling him she could ask for double what she paid. Needless to say she hung on to the horse as she loves him to bits lol But trainer had said that if she waited till he was nearer five he may actually be worth less if she hadnt managed to get him out to 'all the right places' as although he was ovb still capable he should have been more proven by that time.

Are you sure he is 3 years and 10 months? While not impossible it would mean he'd been born in December?

This might affect what competitions and shows he can enter as he would be up against in when competiing against animals a lot older than him in age based classes. If it is true you might be able to use this as a negotiating tool.
