The yard I am at is having its annual show in just under two weeks. It will be my first EVER show, and I believe it will be my pony's first show too!

Am planning to enter Best Turned Out, possibly the Clear Round show jumping (over 6 inch cross poles!) and then do the gymkhana games.

So I need some tips - what do I do to make the beasty look as pretty as possible?

here he is: http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/bexboo1984/09072007321.jpg
I don't really want to plait his mane because it's enormous and I think it looks nice flowing free.

What sort of things will the gymkhana games be? What do I need to prepare for?

I have to some how look smart, which is going to be difficult as I have no smart gear and no money, but I'm sure I can cobble something together...

So, please give me all your fantastic advice for preparing myself and the ponio for our first ever show!

Well for best turned out your like me, I dont plait pickle or chop his mane I like his long flowing locks!

I find cowboy magic hair detangler gives a lovely shine for the mane though, Then I would obviously make sure your tack is absulutely perfect, also I find riding without a saddlecloth usually just makes them look smarter.

For feathers clean them off with some shampoo, get them clean then use chalk to help them look as white as the can

Anyway thats the best i can come up with!

Ahh i remember my first show *goes all wistful!*

Firstly he's a native the fabo thing about Natives - no plaiting!
So other than a good bath and a scrub of those white socks i would leave him 'au natural'. Lots of show sheen for C&T will get him gleaming (just watch saddle or reins dont get slippy).
I dont think you can prepare for Gymkana games really. There great fun and can involve anything. Bending poles, getting off picking up something, say a beanbag and getting on and racing back. All great fun with no preparation needed. Just a good honest, reliable fun pony imo!

As for clothes is there someone at your yard you can borrow from? Just cream/beige jods, a jacket ( i wouldnt worry about what kind for your classes) and a shirt and tie. As long as your clean and presentable anything goes.

You'll love it!!

Will defo be going for in hand then, as his saddle is a bit tatty really.

And I will definitely not be entering the Best Ridden, as we would be laughed out of the ring!

you might have walking race (where you will have to walk) or walk & trot race or walk trot canter for example. In all of these if you trot when you should be walking (or canter) then you have to turn a circle

think it depends on the yard though, at ours if you trot you have to stop for 3 seconds

yes, being native means no plaiting, leave him as natural as possible. I find paiting the bottom of the tail the night before leaves lovely waves and makes the tail look fuller. A little baby oil combed through his mane and tail will add sheen. And a little baby oil around his eyes and muzzle too. A tea towel dipped in hot water and wrung out, then wiped over the body just before the class will remove any left over dirt.

Good luck!!
