for those who dont know i bought a horse last year for me and my daughter to share, she was the rider i was goingto be the carer.
Daughter lost interest, i fell in love so needed lessons sharpish though i was petrified and he felt this turning into a spook monster.
I started havign private lessons in june, just in teh school - friends took him out hacking for me.
Anyway last wednesday, with my instructor i took him out alone, she has taught me how to deal with his spooks, my fear has gone - i know i can control him and im just so so happy.
Tomorrow the girls at my yard are taking us out on our first proper hack - they have arranged a nice steady hack for us, arranged it so me and my horse are on inside of theres and i love them for this.
Pointless post maybe - but just wanted to say if you are determined you can do it. sometimes i was shaking before a lesson - i really was petrified, but my wonderful instructor pushed me just enough each time - a bit more than i wanted at the time - but not too much i was put off.
If i can do it anyone can - i even trotted on the lane going out which is a biggy for me lol

Now i know i can keep my horse, keep him happy and because i do truly love him i am thrilled

The hack was brilliant!!!
We started off by puttign a lead rope on him so my friend could grab him if he started - we have to cross main leeds ringroad to get anywhere - half way round we took it off!
He was perfect,a little star. At one point one of my friends horses planted - he refused to pass a yard with yappy dogs, my other friends horse followed suit.
I suggested Arthru lead because he wasnt fazed at all and he did - he went in front and the other horses then followed him!
We went on main roads, he halted perfectly, even a traffic lights.
We passed a garden where just as we passed a lady turned her lawn mower on - not a blink.
Went in woods, through tight passageways, met dogs, bicycles - he was perfect.
Im over the moon
We were out for two hours and he was perfect, no spooks, halted when asked, trotted and slowed when asked.
Im so so happy
Thank you everyone for all your support and advice and encouragement - im so so happy I can finally fully enjoy my wonderful horse myself now and not rely on friends ot take him out - its taken a long time, lots of nerves, money and determination but we have done it xxxx

Well done! I had my first hack out ALONE today too. It was such a big step for me & boy but felt fab when I got back to the yard, I bet you had the same big grin when you got back too! My Dad was there to get pictures too as we have just been treated to a brand new saddle & bridle.

well done you too - isnt it brilliant - i will remember today for ever and i bet you do too xxx

Really glad for you,and the hack sounded quite challenging, where I am it is straight out onto miles of bridleway, and no need to ride on the road.Hope you enjoy many more loverly hacks.

Well done NM, I've been looking forward to this day and am so pleased it went well for you :)

Although it is lovely to hack out with friends, it is great to know you can hack out when ever you feel like it and not have to rely on others. I know the 'big grin' feeling - I was exactly the same the first time I solo hacked with my girl.

I was forced into the situation because one of the other ladies on the yard said I couldn't go out with her little group when she was there. When she wasn't there I was always welcome with the others. So, a big breath and off we went. My girl was brilliant and it was the start of our adventures.

Even now when I think she has been particularly brave I get the 'big grin'.

A couple of weeks ago we explored a different route by ourselves (10 mile round trip) and had to negotiate scarey narrow gaps between boulders, scarey crates in the orchard, a very scarey bridge over an A-road and she was just brilliant - on occasions she planted but I gave her a little time to think it through and then pushed her on. I was so proud of her.

We've recently been hacking to a friend's yard to hack out with her on her horse. The return journey home was difficult, the first time my girl called for the other horse all the way home and was sweated up. The second time she called twice and was a bit warm. Today she didn't call at all and we had a lovely ride home. BIG GRIN TIME :D

Anyway, well done to you and your horse :)

ah thanks holly - this is arthurs problem - he is brill hacking in company but not so brave alone.
Ive just said to my husband, i need to sort this out so through the week i will hack him out alone - not as far but a little bit further each time.
At weekends we will do group hacks - I need him to be as confident alone as he is in a group.
We will get there - no rush, slowly and a bit further each time on his own -

Ive conquered my fears thanks to him , so now its my turn to repay the favour and help him conquer his - which we will slowly and at our own pace xxx

Sounds like you and Arthur have a great friendship and growing partnership and your trust in each other will continue to grow too. As you said, no rush, you will get there.

You'll have to keep posting and let us know how you get on :)

Oh goodness that is such great news, you are an inspiration, respect!! Still got that journey to travl myself following a nasty fall - hope i get brave enough to be able to make such a post again before too long. Sounds pretty testing conditions by anyone's standards - well done!

Well done NM and becstew - that is fab! I lost my confidence about hacking out alone earlier this year. Partly because I so rarely do it thanks to a 'needy' friend who likes to ride in company.
I have just started to hack out on my own again although I just do a short 3 mile route at the mo!

Hope your confidence continues to grow and you enjoy many more fabulous hacks together!

CONGRATS! I did my first ever hack out today as well. Its an amazing feeling!

Well done you =] and clever horsey for looking after you. xxxx
