So my lovely pony Jay arrived today! He's brilliant and such a sweetie!

Did anyone else worry that they may have done something really bad with their first pony when they first arrived?!!

He has settled really well so far, was happy in his stable when I left but I keep thinking what if I've not given him enough hay? What if I've given him too much hay? What if i didn't secure his stable properly (i know i did - i went back and checked- but what if...) And all sorts of other silly questions!

I've been riding and hanging around stables since I was 10 on and off (now much older), so I'm not clueless, also have lots of very experienced friends around so I'm sure he's fine really!

I'm like a new mum - I want to keep running down to the yard (5 mins down the road from my house) to check on him every 10 mins. I'm looking forward to getting there tomorrow morning and seeing he has made it through his first night then maybe I'll be more relaxed tomorrow!

Sorry for rambling!

Don't worry I'm exactly the same. I go to tr yard and just gaze at him some times as can't quite believe he's mine... Must look like a loon!

Its natural to worry a bit - shows you care!

Good luck and congratulations on your new horse!

I'm exactly the same tonight...

I got my two 6month old minis home today, I'm not new to horse owning, but am new to mini/youngster owning! I'm worried I may have fed them too much, given the wrong amount of hay, worrying that they get scared and do something silly, anything silly you can think of!

Lets both recap in the morning, I'm sure we'll both say all is fine :p :D

Good luck sounds like he has settled already. If he is eating he will be fine. But I know what you mean I did the same for quite a while! As has been said you care and your horse is lucky to have you.

Enjoy.

What an exciting day, I have owned/looked after ponies and horses most of my life, but when I had empty stables I was so excited when my two yearlings arrived to spend the next few years growing with me, the pleasure for me is in the caring and being around them.

So enjoy the time you have with your pony, and we all learn all the time because every day is different and you have never learnt it all where animals are concerned!

Have a lovey day tomorrow.

Oh lovely. :) It's so exciting, isn't it?

The evening Mollie arrived I settled her then came home, I'd arranged to go back first thing the next morning.

I quite literally lay wide awake, staring at the ceiling all night and wondering if it was okay to sneak up to the farm yet or would I wake the farmer if all his dogs barked. :o I was beside myself with excitement. I felt like a little kid.

I was 55 :o

OMG another human bites the dust and ends up worshiping an equine! :)
Now the reality, forget buying yourself any clothes as you will just have to buy that rug, or those boots or better still a new bridle etc. etc. Probably you will say bye bye savings hello overdraft.

But, those are the few negatives, the positives are you will build a bond like no other with your pony. It won't be always easy but the satisfaction when everything goes right is brilliant!

I must be really soppy as I spend most of my day just waiting to go and see my horse so yes I understand exactly how you are feeling!

Good news! He survived his first night! He is now back out in his field flirting with the mare again!

Will post pics when on my laptop! :)

I was a nervous wreck when I bought my first pony! When he arrived I put him in a stable and looked at him and though, oh my god that is now my responsibility! And god was it a steep learning curve! Loved every minute of it though and like you I had lots of experienced people around me.

10 years on and I am much more confident but still doubt some of the things I do. But hes still there everyday, happy and healthy so I must be doing something right :)

My advice to you would be listen to all advice given and make up your own mind. There are a lot of different opinions on how things should be done with horses. and most importantly ENJOY! xx

Spottyfalula that is exactly what I was thinking last night! 'Oh my god what have I taken on!' but he was great this morning, still alive :) I'm sure I'll be as settled as he is in a few days time!

Thanks for your great advice.
