My filly tried climbing gate when sudden gun shot went off close by. other than hair missing there is no punctures....just this lump which has not changed is size since it happened a few weeks ago...

how long will it take to disperse?

Vet has seen it about a week ago and said call her if it gets hard... its not as fluid like as it used to be but not hard....

Most likely it is a haematoma. If so, it may take several weeks to go. It will probably become firmer (but not hotter or painful) and then it will gradually shrink.

Alternating hot and cold compresses may help and if it was an adult horse I would give some bute, but not in a foal because of the risk of ulcers.

Provided there is little heat/pain and it doesn't swell further, cause lameness or start weeping it should settle given some time.

Thank you. there is no pain etc i was hoping it would go by the time i take her to a show. i hope they don't let this affect their decision. i will give it a few more weeks i think...

Would you have it drained or just leave be?

Leave it well alone!

In my experience draining it will likely cause more problems for you, and if you really have to have it drained it must be scanned first.

Few judges would mark you down for this as it is on a foal (which are always up to no good) and it is not a permanent blemish.

Massage it if it is not painful, along with the hot/cold compresses and that should encourage it to go down. Maybe try some Compagel (from your vet) too.
