Tearful phonecall. My friend had an TB type mare on loan, she was 28 but still enjoyed a quiet hack out 2 or 3 times a week. She was ridden yesterday, and turned out for the day today. At bringing in time, she wasn't comfy, and showing signs of colic. Within an hour things had got much much worse, so the vet was called. (possibly a bit slow on this one). Mare, Spyder was thrashing about by this time, and vet was strugglying to stay safe while giving her pain killers. Realising it was beyond treatment, she was shot. Injection couldn't be given because she was so restless, and luckily the vet was very quick, and got the right spot first time.... sounds awful though. Would hate to have that pressure. Anyway, where she was laying caused problems to move her, so it took ages to get her out of the stable. Then, if that wasn't bad enough, the meat wagon got stuck by the gateway, and had to wait for a tractor to help. My friend is very sad, Spyder was very fit for her age and she was looking well.
Just had to share, poor Spyder, poor my friend. Not a nice thing to witness.

Im sorry for your friends loss, brings back very painful memories, although there was no way mine were ever going to be shot or sent to the meat man.
I hope your friend can come to terms with the loss. It is an awful thing to go through. xx

Knowing her set up, I can imagin how awful it must have been. (difficult access, muddy gateway ect..) I don't think the vet had a choice, shoot the mare, or let her die slowly in pain, as she was kicking about so much, it was dangerous. My friend C, is very upset. Totally unexpected.
The owner knows everything too.
