At the livery yard, my friend has a 9 year old tb x mare, she can be a nasty horse when your off her but when riding she does do as told.

For the last few months my friend noticed that shes been throwing her head off and leaning in strongly on the left rein when trotting or cantering.

She had her mouth checked and its fine, she does twitch when she is touched at the withers, there are no signs of rubbing etc.

Any suggestions welcome

Back pain.

Does her saddle fit? It could be more pinching than rubbing that is causing her to hurt. Or she's put her back out. Maybe suggest a chiro/massage/vet visit for her and see if that solves it.

Does your friend catch her in the mouth when riding, ie has unsteady hands? That could also be causing her to be resisting.

She has had a few others from the yard ride her and they all agree that she has something wrong. Some suggested that the saddle was too small and is hurting her, so shes tried a different saddle, but I dont know how that went.

I suggested to her to get the horses back checked, I hope it didnt fall onto deaf ears

sounds like a horse I used to know, vet ended up putting a marble inside her cause it was suspected to do with her menstrul cycle. She was evil. Tried to kick me once, had me pinned up against a wall, missed me by inches. told her off and she tried to kick again. but somehow she seetled with me cause I was not scared of her. I was the only one who could do anything with her. even her owner was asking me o tack it up. got sold on in the end

I think it's quite likely mare is in some sort of pain, and it could well be that the saddle pinches/presses or just be a bit uncomfortable; horses respond to pain differently and mares in my experience tend to be more sensitive.
I would have someone come and check back and fit of saddle.
