My GELDING mounted a mare....

We have a gelding who does it all summer long...! TBF we did wonder if he was a rig when we got him but blood test negative - he just has a lot of stallion tendencies. He is small with no shoes so no the mares come to no harm - it's just he way he is but he is getting better as he gets older (only 6). Was the gelding young? gelded late?
 
Funnily enough, our 14 yr old was doing just that to one of our mares when we turned up to see them last night. For the whole time we were there he was acting very randy which in turn started my girl flirting with him as well.
 
my gelding at 3 mounted my mare a couple of times when they first met ..... he then believe it or not mounted a friends mare when we were out riding - he was about 6 at the time and normally hated the mare - I was walking behind her chatting not paying attention - her mare stopped dead and he literally grabbed the reins and popped up - had to drag him off by reins - he had leg over friends leg in saddle - luckily friend only bruised I was mortified beyond belief - he hasnt done it since (9 now) I am careful but shows no interest in mares now !
 
Ha ha, my boy did that the first time he was put out in the field with a mare. She was an experienced brood mare, he was used a couple of times for stud duties before been gelded, I turned them out into the field together, she gave him the "come hither" signs", he was on top of her quicker than a rat up a drainpipe with "the old man wiggling"!! :eek: :eek: I shouted at him and he got down quickly looking quite surprised at been chastised for what he thought was perfectly natural.

He never tried it again.
 
Many mares will be having their first season of the year and they always tend to be the worst. One of our mares teases the geldings, shoving her bum in their faces until they attempt to 'do the deed' just to get rid of her.

Yes quite normal. Worse when they are young, mine even mounted my mare whilst I was bringing her in from the field. It was actually really dangerous!:eek::eek::eek:

Mind you, now he's 7 he's in a field surrounded by mares and youngstock and is run ragged by them as is quite riggy and constantly rounding them up and mounting. What a pleasure he has become to ride though! Out of the Cheltenham Gag and into a snaffle.... bliss!

On a serious note, this does mean I can't rug anything that's in with him as (OCD) imagine how awful if he was caught in the legstraps.
 
Every spring, along with the "my horse is now out 24/7 eating long grass but seems to have developed laminitis", we get lots of "OMG my gelding is mounting mares" threads :)

Yes, it happens. It's normal, and it mostly happens in spring, when mares and even geldings are feeling frisky :)
 
My gelding mounts my total slapper of a mare, doesn't quite know what to do when up there though.
He's 6 and is getting better and will probably grow out of it :)
 
Haha this thread has made me chuckle! My gelding was 4 when he arrived on my yard. We always kept the mares and geldings in seperate herds but one morning I arrived to fetch him in and he was in with the girls! He must have jumped the fence and ditch between them! Anyway, as I approach and shouted at him for being naughty he jumped on the nearest mare! He then looked at me as if to say "ummm what do I do now Mum!" at which point I just fell about laughing. :D If nothing else it was the look on the mares face as she looked around at him and rolled her eyes as if to say "ergh, boys!" :D:D
 
My friends mare needed stitches after my gelding tore her (understandably I did offer to pay the vet bill), but he'll have anything, of any age, he's not picky, and knows exactly what to do!

He's not allowed out with mares now...
 
Ha Ha Scarymare - that reminded me on the time ours mounted one of the mares and she was in a rug and yes, he did get caught in the leg straps. When we got up in the morning we noticed they appeared to be somehow connected but the poor little chap was trying to keep up with her on three legs - thank god they are ponies with big brains not panicky horses so just hopped over to be released!

It was quite funny really as my boy is 15hh & the mare is about 12hh - the mares owner was there too and was more amazed that she took his weigh & stood for him than the fact he'd actually got on her! :)
 
We have a little 36 year old 'geriatric' (lol) Shetland gelding who lives by himself at my field owners cottage (so he can get the best of care as he has cushings and can get laminitis) and when my 15.2 mare hurt her leg I had to take her down to the cottage for some rest away from the other horses....little did I know that our little Shetland friend would get a second lease of life and turn into a frisky monster!! He mounted my mare at any given opportunity....his teeny little hooves up on her bum was soo funny, and he would prance about the field showing off to her....never new the little guy still had it in him lol :p
