i had just finished work and was on my way up to stables the road i take is very busy allot of speeding cars pple in a hurry i used to ride up it was not pleasent nearly hit a few times thankfully no need to now as have moved. any way when round blind bend and there is a girl on a grey horse. flip flops, shorts and bikini top NO HAT cantering up very narrow verge i slowed down to pass she jumped of curb and continued to trop up the road. i did not no what to do !!! why do people take the risk ?

the YM and other liveries at the yard next door to ours ALWAYS go out hacking with no hats on.
I see them hack past and it shocks me every time. Unbelievable!

EEEEEP!! Even I would never consider going hatless on the road! Too many maniac drivers about. Also, flip flops shorts and bikini top??! She must be totally insane.

There so should be laws against it. Surely its illegal to ride a motorbike on a road without a crash helmet. Whats the difference?

To be honest, I couldn't give a toss if she wears a hat or not. Her head, her problem. Same with cyclists. Junior riders under 14 have to wear a protective helmet but not adults. I would be far more concerned about her lack of hi-viz - protect the poor horse who doesn't have a choice and the poor drivers who might hit her as she canters off the grass verge.

See, I generally agree with 'their head, their problem' etc etc..... But when you are involving other people IE drivers, pedestrians, cyclists etc..... really don't agree with it. Feel sorry for other road users, and sorry for the horses.

Agree with this - if she wants to risk her life thats her choice - to risk her horses is wrong and selfish
This is why i also get so angry with dangerous drivers, ok if they want ot risk thier lives overtaking ona bend for example its up to them - but the idiots risk other people too

Selfish beyond belief

that was my point i would never forgive myself if i hit her or her poor horse no thought to other pple yeh its her choice but makes me so angry

The rider choose to not wear her hat or much else, thinking,,omg, why! on a very busy road.
Still I would be upset if she and her horse got hurt or she caused someone else to get hurt.

Not wearing a protective helmet for dressage (both officially for competition and for schooling too which is a norm for many) is a huge, wide-reaching issue, far bigger than one person... but I digress!

Sounds like the girl was enjoying the weather and her horse, allbeit not in a very responsible manner! I wouldn't get on any neddy without a hat, and feel uncomfortable watching others do the same. People have to make their own minds up about the risks they're willing to take. If I was on a road and saw that I'd be horrified... and I'd be literally tramatised if she collided with my (theoretical) car!

F80 has a great post with photos about the good her hat did when she fell on the road during a hack. She's described her injuries on here, and they're not mild by any means... but her skull's intact and she's alive...

I agree that it is riskier to ride on roads without a hat than in a school, but to play devil's advocate, why don't you agree with it when you involve other road users, and why do you feel sorry for them and the horses?

I don't think it is a case of 'their head, their problem' especially having been in hospital with a broken leg after a fall, and seeing how much NHS time and cost is spent looking after us when we suffer injuries. If we can reduce the seriousness of any injuries caused by our choosing to take part in a risky sport, I think we should, if nothing else to respect the medical profession who work so hard to look after us all.

Ditto.

Because on my own private land I'm not endangering the public??....

It is illegal to ride a motorcycle on the road without a crash helmet on. This is not to protect anyone else, it is to protect the rider, therefore I think the same rule should apply to riding horses on the road.

Slightly different but, I ride my motorcycle wearing a back protector and full leathers, proper gloves and boots and a high vis. However, when I have nipped to the shops a mile away in hot weather I have gone wearing jeans, trainers, no gloves, but wear a proper jacket and helmet.

I did have a minor crash years ago when I was wearing jeans, trainers and no gloves and I felt really bad because the police and paramedics turned up and I was sat in A&E for 8 hours getting a few minor cuts and grazes cleaned and dressed. If I had been wearing gloves and proper trousers I wouldn't have wasted those peoples time.

It's one of those things that people won't really understand unless the worst happens. Even then, they may still not understand it.

Having suffered 4 years of pain and surgery after a head injury caused while leading a horse from a field, I honestly cannot understand how anyone would get on a horse without a hat regardless of where they are riding but then its always the "oh it wont happen to me" until it does and then you pay the price. But to not wear a hat on a road is just plain idiotic. Guy on a yard up the road from me does it all the time and its all I can do to bite my lip and not tell him how completely moronic he is being, I want to show him a photo of the hole I had in my head and the balloons I had in my scalp to stretch my skin and grow new hair, and the scars I have, and I want to tell him how it affected my family, my friends, my job, my confidence, my memory and how bloody painful my recovery was. Wouldnt make a bit of difference though cause all he cares about is how nice his hair looks as he trots along the road. Lets hope he lives long enough to keep it that way

Good grief, they're mad. I had a nightmare one night which I remember vividly, I was riding on the road with no hat on, came off and landed on the top of my head. It was dreadful, dont want to be graphic but I walked about with the top part of my skull missing!!! That dream was enough to stop me ever even thinking about going hatless (which I dont)!

As Hevs says, its not just the person that suffers with a head injury - its everyone around them. Totally selfish IMO to not wear a simple hat.

Dunlin, agh you wear jeans on your motorbike - have you seen how your butt and knees get shredded if you slide up the road in jeans? OUCH! I always go out in full textiles (and a helmet obviously).

I don't think I worded my post very well, sorry I was watching the National at the same time :o

What I was saying is... I have nipped to the shops wearing jeans n trainers before because I thought "ohh its not far" but years ago after falling off wearing jeans, trainer and no gloves and seeing the MESS it caused both to myself and the emergency services I no longer ride my bike unless it's top to toe in leathers, boots, gloves and my lid.

Hence you learn, or you don't, from your mistakes. I was one that learnt by thankfully not doing myself any serious damage!

Hope you have a little more respect for me now:D
