I need help, can any one offer advice.

right hear goes....

my house backs onto the back of some woods and i have a GSD that is about 1.5 years old. We have a small 3 ft fence at the bottom of the garden because we needed a fence to keep the dogs in (we also have a jack russel X), but we wanted to keep the view.

How ever when Starkey (the GSD) runs down the garden he can push the gate open even though it has a bolt on it, and he runs off down the woods for 1/2 hour or so. Dont get me wrong he is realy friendly but we do not know how to keep him in the garden, because we dont want him put down 4 attacking another dog, which he may well do because there are some breeds that he doesnt like.

so if any one can help i would be glad to listen to any ideas.

i have tried but nothing stops him, i have been training him since he was 10 weeks old or there abouts. i supose its just cuz he can hear other dogs.

thanks any way

There is a device that you can get which sends out high pitched sound I thing you bury it in the ground and the animal will not want to go near where it is. (don't worry people can't hear it and you can turn it on and off for when you do want dogs to go out the gate

) I have never tried this but it might be something good to look at.

A three foot fence will not keep a GSD in- if it wants out!!
Invest in a better fence? Chainlink is see through for your view...or weldmesh? Then mend the gate and put trigger hooks through the fastening bolts ..same as on a stable to stop clever horses from opening doors.
Finally train the dog, recalls are essential to avoid your dog going awol , ending up in a stray kennel or being PTS ...which he could easily be, remember someone only has to THINK the dog is going to bite for it to fall foul of the DDA!!!!!

You want at least a 6ft fence with a dog of that size, as a working dog too they have the ability to scale. Get a decent latch or lock or bolt on your gate so that he can't get it open.

The only other thing you can do is keep him on a lead. Presumably he doesn't go out unattended? In which case he doesn't have a recall or you'd get him back before he disappears.

Would agree that you need a higher fence. If you don't want to lose the view try a baulk wire i.e. some chain link or similar angled inwards at the top of the fence. Can you not put more than one bolt on the gate? One of my bitches is a terror for rattling the door to her run, there are now 3 bolts on it, top, middle and bottom, and as long as they are always properly shut she cannot open them. You really need to stop him getting out, even the friendliest GSD in the world could cause people concern if he is running loose on his own, and nowadays that is all it needs for someone to complain and for him to be pts in the worst case scenario. And I am not being anti-GSD, I have 3 at the moment, and that is the lowest number I have had in my life!

If you don't want to invest in new fencing all I can suggest is either tie him up on a tether (Just long enough so he can't reach the fence, perhaps a lunge line?) Or when you do let him out the back, stay and watch him and then call him back in. If he doesn't come back to you then you definately need to work the recall training, and definately buy a better fence in that circumstance. I agree with the 6ft thing, at the age of 1 and a half I presume he is a big lad and rather athletic, no way is 3 ft going to keep him in, that wouldn't keep my labs in and 2 of them are fat and one of the is 8, he would clear that not a problem, even at his age.

Put up a dog run perhaps?

I have 9 strand stockwire around my paddocks, they are very efficient at keeping my GSD in if I want him in one place. Stockwire (sheepwire in the UK?) is virtually invisible and wouldn't detract from your view at all, if you put it up above your existing fence you would barely notice it.

thanks 4 all the comments. willl talk to my mum to decide what we should do, whether we shud get a new fence fitted or to get a lunge line. will let you know what we decide

A lunge line would work for training him but please don't leave him unattended on a lunge line as he could get tangled up. An alternative would be to fit a running line in your garden.

Good plan it will take him at least 3 seconds to chew through!!!!

Either fix the fence, get a dog run, put him on a chain or better still find someone who can be bothered to look after him.
