I had my hat fitted a few months ago, but now it's too big and I can move it. I don't want to get a new one just yet as no guarantee my horse can be ridden regularly (rehab work at the moment).

I've looked at the hat padding on amazon but it's quite expensive - is it worth it? Could I just use self adhesive foam tape?

I'm sorry but I would be taking my it back to shop I bought it from. If its definitely too big now they will be able to see this and should accept that they should not have sold it to to start with. I really wouldn't try padding it out at all, you're effectively altering and invalidating any manufacturer guarantee or claims.

When I bought my hat it needed a bit of packing for it to fit correctly. They offer free adjustments for life (of the hat). I would always to a qualified hat fitter for any new hat or adjustments. In your shoes I would defo go back to the shop for advice, it's not worth the risk.

Definitely get one that fits properly. I got my hat fitted professionally and they insisted on a champion hat that needed to be padded in order to fit perfectly.. Even though i had a feeling I had a more charles owen head.. It fit perfectly with padding so I bought it and then as I started riding it just never felt comfortable.. It eventually just start to hurt so much. I went to another shop and got my hat fitted again, and found a hat (yes i did have a charles owen head) that needed no padding.. Best hat ever, no pain, perfect. So dont go for padding - just get the correct fit to begin with

Go back to the shop with it, I had the same problem with my hat. They took one look and added an extra strip of tap or 2, it does happen because there is padding that just squashes down a bit in the first few weeks. I have had no problems with fit since getting the extra bit.

If you've got long hair, french plait it, it takes up an extra bit of space. This assumes you're a girl, I don't think french plaits are a boy thing.

Says who?

My local tack shop when I asked about padding said a number of manufacturers send it to them with the hats but they aren't allowed to use it/ sell it/ leave it lying around where I can pick some up. Very difficult for me cos if I get a hat that's wide enough I have a gap of 1-3 inches clear space at the back depending on brand. I would try contacting the manufacturers direct for some, or otherwise only buy the proper hat stuff as some adhesives can cause the polystyrene type hat material to degrade.

Personally I'd ask the shop to sort this. It is amazing how many places are supposed to be "qualified hat fitters" but they will gladly point their clients towards the more expensive end of the range rather than something that actually FITS!!

If they won't play ball, you could always try going to the manufacturers direct?

I wouldn't be inclined to try and do anything to alter the fit yourself as a DIY job; what price your safety????
