It really is! Will it be safe to feed to my horses? I think it's just been recently cut, im not sure how long haylage has to stay baled after being cut, can anyone advise me please?
I personally wouldnt, is it dry or still really moist? I think until its properly fermented it can have the same problems as feeding grass cuttings! If its dry and really fine I was on a yard with some like that and my horse continually choked on it so had to go and buy my own stuff!
Ring supplier ask when it was bailed, as i normally leave my haylage min 6 weeks, so that would work it was cut and bailed in march.
To be honest i would not think it is this years as no-one has started cutting yet i think due to the lack of growth, but i could be completely wrong
Haylage (plastic wrapped) takes a few weeks to ferment and reduce the sugar level but it varies depending on type of grass and moisture percentage. Best ask the farmer whodunnit what's best time to open. If you open too soon then you basically just stop the preservation process however, it will still ferment - it's just not very nice and will sour and mould within a few days.
We had no choice BUT to use fresh cut HAY last year as we were so short!! All horses still alive although one has developed an extra head and glows bright green..
