my heart goes out to the poor lad

So do I. At least the advertisment seems quite honest about him. Unfortunately this is the truth for a huge number of ex-racehorses - one reason why I don't support racing in any way, shape or form. The non-winners are just collateral damage. The lucky ones get sold for a new life as a riding horse, the unlucky ones go straight to the butchers hook. Remember that the Thoroughbred Rahab centre in Lancashire came into being when someone recognised an ex-Grand National WINNER dying of starvation in a field.

How does this sort of thing suddenly happen? How much would it cost her to have it shot? Or would the meat man buy it off her?
Poor lad I really hope someone took him on. I have an ex racer who probably would have been in a similar situation 6yrs ago.

This absolutely appals me, i absolutely abhor racing.

People are oblivious or simply don't care about the animals welfare - these horses are worked to within an inch of their lives from a young age and then when they are no longer and the term used is "commercially viable" they are tossed aside to be someone else's problem. Or to be shot by sum bent vet more interested in money than animal welfare!

People waltz about on grand national day with their stupid hats on oblivious to the "real" side of racing.

If anyone would like to see the real side of racing go to the website of Animal Aid and see the list that they make on racehorse deaths in this country! horses die from broken necks/Broken Legs its appalling.

I will NEVER agree with horse racing EVER - it is a bent industry and the people that support it in my opinion should be ashamed of themselves!

I know this is quite a strong opinion and i am truly sorry if this upsets anyone but it is something i feel really strongly about.

I don't see why there are anti racing replies - this horse has been out of racing for 5 years and would seem to have had a life doing other stuff since then. He isn't on the scrap heap due to racing - obviously other things have changed his circumstances. I doubt he has been shot, but if that is the case then I'm afraid it is sad but it is a reflection of the market / economy at the moment. Better one swift bullet than a slow death due to neglect in some field somewhere. As it happens my father is a racehorse trainer and in the past has been a breeder too. I have seen the better side of racing yards and racehorse care and aftercare. Please don't tar all racing people with the same brush.

There are in racing, as there is in every equine discipline, good and bad methods/people/stories. Lets see,.... dressage is only for women who lunch, have too much money and not enough guts to jump, showjumping is only for chavs, eventers take ridicolous risks on their horses, show people only get placed on whom they know not what they are riding.... see?? all said about different disciplines and before anyone shouts, I don't actually agree with any of the above!! just pointing out there is good and bad in all things equine!

Shame you patently haven't a clue what you're on about then.........

Caledonia,

Would you say that someone who has re trained at least many ex racers and worked at at many racing yards does not know what they are on about?

All i ask is that my opinion is respected as i respect yours and others of this forum

Ditto, said similar to what I was going to!

As he's up for free, i doubt he'd have been shot anyway....always someone out there wanting a free horse. If not to sell or have temporarily until new home suited.

This is respecting other people?

Allsorts, if you want your opinion respected, then don't write such inflammatory nonsense as you did in your post that I initially replied to. You didn't warrant a thought out response.
And no, retraining 4 exracers does not make you an authority on racing, and neither does working in some yards. Especially when you advocate following the inane self serving tripe that is served up by animal aid.

And finally, the original post was about a horse that has been out of racing for FIVE years! Yet you pick on the possible misery of what could be ANY breed of horse in this situation, to peddle your extremist views about racing.
