As some of you know, my lovely horse Maiden colicked last weekend and ended up in surgery on Tuesday. She looked miles better by the end of last week and was due to go home on Saturday.

She then went downhill on Saturday morning so stayed in, and this morning we got a call to say she'd been colicking all night and had got very bad this morning. Vet had "found a lump" (don't know what - melanoma?) but couldn't operate again as she barely stayed alive last time.

So my beautiful lady has gone.
 
I'm so sorry to hear this :( I lost my old girl last month and however much I know it was her time, and for the best, I still can't help but miss her beautiful face in the field each day :( xx

I think the lump your vet reffered to is a small fatty lump called a lipoma. Older horses are more prone to lipomas and they can get wrapped around a piece of intestine, usually the small intestine and cut of the blood supply which causes part of the gut to die. My friends horse was operated on for colic and they had found a number of lipomas and he was PTS on the table.

Really sorry for you. I lost my boy 3 years ago October 2nd and its still really hard now.
I was prepared though as had planned for the vet to come and put him to sleep. It must be so hard when youre not ready for them to go.

One thing i did find useful was a book called "Beyond the rainbow bridge" which helps with dealing with the loss of a horse. It was a comfort to me and just helped me get my head around it a bit better.

Its early days but time does heal, and be thankful that you met such a wonderful creature. I know i also got great comfort knowing that the 13 years i gave my boy were the best of his life. Im sure they appreciate it and im sure its the same for your horse. You can learn to love another but you always remember them.

Big hug for you, we all know the pain on here and its the equine "family" that we are that can share and sympathise.

I'm very sorry to hear this, she sounded as if she had turned the corner.

You never gave up on her - many would have after such a long haul with her lameness - and you should feel proud of that. My grey boy is up there somewhere, perhaps they can graze together among the stars. :)
 
RIP Maiden. I lost my girl to colic on 27th July this year - I had left her in livery in Spain while I came to the UK and she was due to travel here 2 weeks later. She never made it and I lost her to colic only 1 week after leaving her. I felt awful as the vet was trying to contact me for several hours but my phone was out of signal and I didn't realise - meaning Lucy suffered more than she should have and was all on her own in a strange place, with people she didn't know. I still feel terrible about it and miss her every day so I know how you feel.

My thoughts are with you. Maiden is up there playing with my Lulu now - one day we will all be with them again xx
