My horse broke his jaw today :(

Hi

Yes, my horse has broken his jaw (the year before he managed to break his nose as well - bloody thoroughbreds). He only broke it on one side and because the horses jaw has got two sides to it it usually only has to be wired if both sides are broken. My horse did not need to be wired. I found he was fine eating grass, luckily it was spring so he was turned out all day and I gave him haylage over night as it had a moisture content and he found it easier to chew than straight hay. The thing I had to watch out for was that in addition to the break he had a puncture wound right where the break was and the vets said that we'd need to really watch his teeth in that area in case there was any infection. Needless to say we had about 3 weeks worth of norodine and bute. He had a really hard lump (bony) right underneath where he broke it and I was worried at the time that we wouldn't get rid of this but over time (about 6 months) it has gone right down and you can barely notice it. He was off work for about 4 months in the end and I gave him an extra month on top of what the vets recommended but once I started him again he was fine.

Hey guys, thank you all so much for your support and kind words it has all helped me feel better and more positive about the situation.

So today i go into work for 5.45 only to be taken straight into the office and told i can go home!! :) result! i am very much happier and relieved. I am going to follow the horsebox down to Edinburgh i think.

Jojo ah yes you keep your horse just outside Ellon? at the show centre? I am actually a postie in Ellon and the surrounding areas, i know a girl who keeps her horse their well i know her vaguely thanks for that link it might be usefull in helping to get him back up. I am sorry to hear about your horsey :(..x

Yes it is indeed the spotty in my sig i'v had him since he was a tiny baby and he is really an exceptional horse behaviour wise generally but i guess they all get themselves into mischief once in a while, i only hope he learns from it! :)

Will keep everything crossed for you :hugs: he will be in good hands at the bush and if you need anything at all I am not far from there! I know Eric Gillie does a lot of trips up and down the country so he may be able to help with getting him it might be worth giving him a call once you know what is happening xx
