My horse goes backwards

Hi everyone was just looking for advice iv had my pony for a year now and we have got past a lot of things he used to be nappy and walk backwards but we got past it I used to just ask him twice and he would do it iv had my friend ride him and he’s got away with it in some places and she’s got off and walked and now he’s got really bad at napping I don’t know what to do he walks backwards sooo fast down the way he wants to go he walks in circles fast by himself and walks half in the hedge and you can’t stop him he will not stand still he gets sooo wound up he grunts and he’s bucked and reared before and I don’t know what to try Iv tried stopping him making him wait ask again iv tired hitting him not hard but he doesn’t listen it makes him worse and I don’t know how to get past it again now any advice would help Thankyou

Lessons with a good instructor will help you loads. They may also need to ride the pony themselves to school him for you, plus they'll be able to see if there is a physical issue causing the napping.

Sadly I have found that nappy horses always have that tendency, so the wrong rider can set them back in their schooling.

Thanks I’m going to try and get someone out it seems to be more on the roads and things like If get to a cross road ect he’s very strong willed definitely! Thanks for your advice!

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your pony OP.

Firstly, you may get a better response if your post this in The Tack Room, as not many users view the posts in this section. :)

Yes, a good instructor is worth their weight in gold, and they may be able to pick up on something with your riding that is not helping the situation. However, I would also have the saddle / bridle / teeth checked to rule out any pain or discomfort. I would also have my vet carry out checks to rule out any physical problems that may be causing this napping.
