My horse had an awful fall today

I had an awful experience today. We were all out on the park which was a little slippy due to the rain. We approached a rather steep hill (going down) and thought it best to stagger the descent.

As I turned right my horse slipped and her whole back body fell onto the ground. My leg got crushed as we hit the ground. She then pulled herself up (I managed to stay on) and walked on a bit confused.

She is a little stiff now and I am worried about the potential damage it has caused her. She's a TB mare, 17 years old. They are finely made and I just hope she's gonna be ok. It was a shock. Isn't it awful when things like this happen

Oh no. Poor pony and poor you. Hope she is ok, maybe just give her a few days rest incase she is a bit sore. If she seems very sore prehaps a visit from the physio or chiropracter?
Fingers crossed.

Oh how awful i bet you were both shaken up from that. My mare once had a similar fall and damaged her shoulder as that was the part that seemed to take the force first. I had her physio out as she was very stiff and sore for about a week afterwards.
Perhaps give her a couple of days off, some tlc, and gentle riding a few days later. See how she is but it may be useful to get a physio just in case.

Hope you and ned are ok hun. When you say you staggered the descent, do you mean you zig zagged back and forth down it? I used to ride on coastal sand dunes and some of them were heart-stoppingly steep. At each step the horse sinks in deep in the loose sand and I remember having to lean back so far in the saddle that I was LYING on the horse's rump. The trek leader shouted, oh it's just like flying and I thought no it's not, it's just like deliberate suicide! Anyway, the point of this is that I was always taught that the safest way to ride a horse down an incline is straight down, to avoid exactly the accident that you had x

Mine smacked down sideways on tarmac a couple of years ago (so he was 16). I few clear but broke my collar bone and he was fine other than a little cut to his leg. I did get him a session with my McTimoney guy shortly after though just to be on the safe side.

Think he was more shocked than anything although physio did say he was a little sore so i was glad I had him checked over before riding him again.
