My 3yr Old Mare Has A Splint and I don't know what is best to do? Shall I Rest Her? If so how long for? Does She Need Antibiotics? Does It Need To Be Cold Hosed? PLEASE HELP ME! Her splint is 3 weeks old, no lameness, size of a broad bean, a little sore to touch, hard. I have been riding her but only walk and trot only once a week.

My youngster also threw a splint, we chose to rest her and had it injected by the vet.

Never was lame on it but did this as a precaution.

It has practically disappeared now so pleased we went down that route.

Rest, you can leg ice it to help it settle.
My mare has a splint that she threw 8 years ago without a problem then it flared up in the summer 3 years ago, 4 weeks box rest, leg ice and it went! Wouldnt even spot it now unless i pointed it out!

Agree with others, rest her and cold hose a couple times a day. It you allow plenty of time now it shouldn't cause a problem again.

My horse now has a couple of splints, one is quite big, neither ever caused a problem I think it is best to ignore them and carry on as usual.
With the first I rested, cold hoses ect didn't help just went loopy without work
Second I ignored completely.

Splints are really only a problem if they are high and interfere with the capsular ligament of the knee.
As long as they are allowed to heal without pressure then the area will in fact be strengthened.
I have many clients’ horses that have splints and they show no signs of it being detrimental.
But do let the small and large metacarpals bond without having any strain put on them during the process
