had an awful evening as arrived at farm to find V hopping lame... wouldn't put anyweight on his off hind and when i dragged him in from the field he was trying to walk on the point of his toe. major panic of me thinking he'd broken his fetlock- but when i couldn't find any heat or swelling started to hope it would be an abcess - which it was! phew! just got home now after waiting for him to come round from the sedative so that he wouldn't choke himself. hate leaving them when they've had sedation but he seemed pretty awake and was eating his net fine so hopefully he'll be ok???

i'm supposed to be at kelsall a week saturday...should i just withdraw now or should i wait til nearer the time??? what do we think?

When MG had his whoopsee before Lincoln, I was all set to withdraw from Gatcombe on the Monday. didn't and he soon came sound. Give it a few more days at least!!

Glad it is "only" an abcess - know how worried you must have felt with hopping lame horse!
What is the refund policy at Kelsall? If any chance of a refund I would withdraw now. If not leave it till much nearer the time

Jeez, I remember when Hen went hopping lame, your brain immediately goes into worst case scenario!! Glad it's only an abcess, I would agree with BaggyBreeches.
My old horse was constantly getting them, it never wrangled him as much time off as he hoped :D

its an abcess! not the end of the world and very common. with poulticing and tubbing for the next 3 days would expect horse to be fine again. get the shoe back on and ready to go. wont lose much fitness in 5 to 6 days. depends on how fit he was prior to abcess? why did your vet have to sedate? does he have attitude? i would also suggest you get your farrier to have a look as vets do tend to dig to austrailia to relieve an abcess!?

well she said that she wasn't sure if it was a genuine abcess or whether he's stood on a sharp stone and basically caused a deep hole which has then got infected...but he was really sore on it so said it would be better to sedate him to dig it out- which i think was a good idea as he was still reacting to it being scrubbed out even with the sedative (its a back foot as well and he doesn't really like having his back feet picked up ;) ) Good thing is was near his frog so didn't need to take shoe off...but is probably making it more painful...
she said to hot poultice for 4 days and then just keep it clean and covered up until it hardens up- so i guess i should just wait to see?

kelsall withdrawal policy says:
WITHDRAWALS by 18:00 Tue April 12 by telephoning 01244 851164. REFUND POLICY - 100% refund for withdrawals before ballot date. Full refund less £12 admin fee if replaced after ballot date - see rule 2.20.

i know that they didn't ballot so guessing that will mean no wait list? and therefore no point in withdrawing earlier rather than later?
he's really quite fit so not worried about that... just guess it depends how long it takes.
how long will bute take to get out of his system??

i better pull out then. vet said to give him bute til friday as he was very sore on it... i know the chances of getting dope tested are slim but would just be my luck to get done! :o
oh well, break up for easter hols in two weeks so at least hopefully he'll be ok to ride when i'm off :)
