I was asked by a friend of a friend if one of my horses was still for sale as she had noticed it on a site a few days ago, now none of my horses are or have been advertised for sale as planning on them going nowhere!
I asked if it was definately one of mine and asked her to look through the pictures of him on a social network we are in contact through and she pointed out the following picture sayin it was definately that picture and that he is advertised for sale at between £2-£2.5k and as brought as a project but does everything as asked? now i have had him from 6 months of age his now 4!
Now this has slightly concerned me as dont want my horse stolen as heard of afew scams going round and really do not want any of my horses stolen. Now this could be a sick joke but if it is there will be hell to pay!
If anyone has or does come across the following picture please can you let me know. I have hunted all the sites i can think of but havent come accross anything but it could be the case that I have missed it. we are in the hertfordshire area
*edited to say should had she apparently cant remeber which site she saw it on
thank you for your help

Unfortunately anything you post on the internet is in the public domain for 'borrowing'. Many people use other pictures to advertise horses as they are either better pictures or they are too lazy to take their own so borrow ones which many appear similar.

The other scenario is a clone of an old advert, these are used by pure con artists, who will often ask for a deposit for something they don't even have for sale and will disappear with the cash.

This has happened recently people accessing pictures of other horses and putting them up on the internet for sale.

The scam I think mostly works the other way ie they will use other pics of horses, sell them via the internet from the pics and say they will deliver them for you but take the money and run so to speak

If you can remember where he was for sale they will take it down.

I think it most recently occurred with them nicking actual for sale adds and advertising them for cheaper etc.

thank you
anyone who has access to my fb account have access to my pictures.
Worrys me as know of a couple of scams involving stealing horses to order, and has happen after his first show where he has done really well.
He is freezemarked but needs re doing so going to call them to re book and also aske their advice

oh dear- poor you. Dont fret as many have said above is prob lazy people who cant be arsed to add properly. Get your freezemark up to date asap and put security on your facebook as friends only xxx

This happened to me a few years ago; however, are you sure your friend is not trying to scare you? I know that is quite an accusation to make but as you say 'she apparently can't remember which site she saw it on.'

i know she has been pretty vague but its a bit joke
I have just called farmkey to get his freezemark re done they have adviced me to contact the police just so they have it on record
thanks for your help everyone

Well I'd be fuming if my horse was up for sale on some website if I came across it but if your friend can't remember which site it was, which to be honest, you'd think they would, specially something as important as that, I know I'd remember

, anyway I wouldn't worry too much, just keep a close eye on things.

It can also work like jobsites - they put up a picture of a horse (or an ad for a job that doesn't exist) and when you contact them they say they're very sorry but that one has now gone - but they've got something else you might be interested in...
So what they are trying to sell in this case is a horse of that type, rather than the specific horse.

apparently it was in hertfordshire which is our area which is why it attracted her to the advert.
somethings she has said doesnt add up but i cant help but worry.
my OH is popping onto our local police station just so they have it on file
i guess i am a little worried as there has been a spate of thefts of coloured in our area, and worried if one horse iis suppose to be advertised maybe the other 2 of mine are too?

Thats what we are looking for but cant find the advert, apparently the contact name is the same as my OH but who would that stupid!
I am going to be fuming if this is all a joke as been up most of the night worrying

cant you try and google your qh name and see if the advert comes up !!!!

I've had this happen to me twice, different photos of different horses of mine used i ads, one for a horse in Yorkshire and the second in Essex. Both ads were on Horsemart and it was actually folk of forums who alerted me to it. I contacted Horsemart and they said there was nothing they could do about it, I phoned the numbers and the first guy did answer and I asked him all sorts of questions about his mare, followed it up by coming straight out and asking what he thought he was doing using a photo of my horse to sell his - he hung up, but ad was pulled the same day. I've had someone else use my mares name and BSJA history to try and sell a pony, that ended up in court.
I now only rarely post photos online.

My advice - go straight to Mr Plod - provide ALL relevant details and insist they investigate the advert. However, prospective buyers would have to come to YOU to view/ride the horse in question anyway. Just send them whence they cometh with a flea in their ear and the advice that the horse was never "For Sale" in the first instance.
