My horse has been the victim of some godawful tail pulling...

Fortunately, we're not doing any showing at the mo. I've only ever had M&M's before which don't need anything doing to the tail except a wash every now and again:rolleyes: So poor Danny boy has had to grit his teeth and stand for hours with nothing but a haynet to accompany him whilst I pull chunks out of his enormous mane. (I may be exaggerating)

Now, I went to pull his tail and I've never pulled one before but I've seen many people do it. So, Solocomb at the ready I attack his tail.

HOW DO I RECTIFY THIS?!?!?

Leave it to grow for a bit then get a pro out to pull it

(I'm not allowed sharp scissors, solo comb, pulling blade, thinning rake, pulling comb, clippers, trimmers etc as I get a bit to hands on!!)
 
IMO you can't really rectify that! It's going to take an awful lot of time. If you ewant to keep a pulled effect you can use a solorake (solocomb not suitable) to keep the very outer edges tidy and short while the centre grows out.

It will take time, but a short stint with a tail bandage immediately before going in the ring will help.

Step away from that Solocomb!!!
I am officially banned from touching a solocomb, its much too easy to get a quick disaster.
Leave to grow, get a professional in or get a rake, they are a lot less dangerous!
 
I'd get a pro groomer out tbh, I'm sure they would be able to sort it out in some sort of manageable fashion.

Solo combs are made by devils, who just laugh at us giving our lovely horses silly hair cuts (yes I've done it too, but on a mane) learnt to use thinning sicscors now my manes are extra fab!

I would just leave it to grow out if you aren't showing, D's tail looks 500 times worse than that after he rubbed the top layer off and didn't take too long to grow back

I have pulled his mane in the correct way and that is looking quite good for a first timer!! I just feel a bit mean pulling hair out of their tail!!

I think I've seen these Solorake things around. Would the best thing to do be to use that on him, or let it grow for a bit and then use it?

I salvaged a tail like this one,someone had done something similar to a friends appy that was qualified for a big show. I evened it all out with a tail rake,it still wasn't great but looked much better. She then just had to wait for it to grow out. She was so grateful that she gave me a nice bottle of vino!
 
Don't pull their tails in the first place! (personal hate). Can never understand why anyone (or anything) likes/wants to have hair pulled out!
But, as you have already done so, give it time and get a lesson in the meantime from an expert - tips are useful things along the way.

BTW, I've seen MUCH MUCH worse!
 
First please place solo comb in a disposal recepitical !

To be able to rectify this you will need to let it grow out a bit first. Wash the tail and tail bandage if you need to compete and but please resist the urge to attack the tail even further with other instruments of tail torture!!

When the tail has grown out a bit, employ a professional who can show you how to pull a tail correctly, and to shape the tail to bring out the best of your horses behind !

It is a bit of a skill but one that is so worth learning (and the small expense)

Nothing is allowed anywhere near manes and tails on my horses or liveries horses except my fingers !
