My horse has broken my hand

Am feeling very sorry for myself.

My horse (Fred) was feeling very full of himself yesterday. Generally spooky and managed to make his 17hh frame feel like 18hh!

I was leading him and he firstly spooked sideways although I managed to jump out of the way in time. He then spooked again but knocked me over to the floor. Just as I was getting up the stupid lump of a 17hh stood on my right hand.

I have broken my fourth finger and also broken the knuckle at the base of that finger. My hand is black and swollen like a tennis ball and SO painful.

Sorry, useless post,but I am feeling very sorry for myself.

Dwi -about six weeks!

Maisiemoo - actually I haven;t forgiven him! lol. He was very naughty and it was more naughtiness than a proper spook out of fear. He is usually a sweetheart to lead and ride. But he was very naughty when I rode him previoisly to being led. I had to get off him as I felt he was going to explode. Then led him from the school and then he flattened me.

I think I have come to realise today that you can only influence a horse as much as they want to be influenced and that we never have complete control over them. I've never broken a bone before and it was very scary being on the floor with Fred freaking and his hooves stamping around my head. Think I was very lucky it was just my hand. Its just got me thinking deeply really. Tonight I feel I could sell my three horses, and especially Fred. I love him dearly, but I've never been unable to handle a horse before. First time I've not had control really, and I think its frightened me.

No, we're not in full control of another creature that has its own brain. We just have to go along with what 'control' and co-operation we can muster. It was a damn scary time for you, but don't make any decisions in haste, give yourself some time. Hugs.
 
Do you get any time off work......? (Trying to look on the bright side! ;))

Sounds painful! Hope you're ok! Give it a few days/weeks and one of them will do something to remind you why we love the horrible things! :D

Been in tears most of the day. Mixture of shock/pain and painkillers and realisation that I weigh nothing in comparison to him and could havebeen seriously trampled.

Sorry to sound like a complete wuss, but that was by far the most scary thing thats happened to me in 30+ years of having horses.
 
Yes i can see how forgiveness would be difficult, last time my mare spooked whilst being long lined in the school i was'nt feeling too well so stupidly let go thinking i would catch her in a minute. crazy creature [ who is 14.3 ] cleared the five bar gate and went back to her stable .
She tried it on again and there was no way she was getting away this time so i ended up getting bounced off the school fencing and throwing myself on the floor so she could'nt jump the gate , creates an amusing picture now , sand skiing !!. I still need to learn that she is alot stronger than me no matter how stubborn i think i am !

Is damn scary hun. After I bounced on my head, the first time I cantered Dizz I nearly came off again. Bad.

It is a very scary thing to have happened and yes, you could have been trampled, but you weren't. Hold onto that hun.
 
lots of ice, lots of painkillers, you poor thing.
try not to dwell on it, put it out of your mind, in over 30 yrs with horses this 5 secs of his lunacy is a very very small percentage...
have they told you that you can overlap ibuprofen and paracetamol, that's what i had to do with my knee when it was v painful. keep icing it, then arnica, comfrey oil, etc.

Kerilli, thanks. Yes, been taking calprofen (which I think is ibuprofen based) along with paracetamol alternating every two hours. Been a bit spaced out, lol. Wanted a tot of whisky tonight, but hubby wouldn't let me. Very wise. I'd completely forgotten I couldn't mix painkillers with alcohol. Duh.

I know the feelings that you are going through ie selling all ! .

My big ignoramus youngster who is just over 16.2hh likes to think she can walk all over me in a pressure headcollar . Just last week she got away on me twice, one day after the other . I bought a chifney and shoved it into her after a good friend advised me, and fingers crossed (no pun intended :o ) she has been as good as gold .

So sorry to hear about you breaking your hand, hope it heals soon x I have a chipped bone just under my thumb from a fall a week ago grrr.

I think I act firm and in charge around my horses, but if the poo hits the fan the horse will just react after all they are animals. I never delude myself to think I am in control, more of a case I attempt my very best to make my horse believe I am in control ;)

I thought my 15h was giving me grief, but brave of you to take on a 17h. You definitely need a bit of time to get over the shock and stress. I've had a few incidents with mine over the years, and you somehow feel a bit betrayed don't you? Like they know they're going to hurt you and they don't care. But that's just horses, they don't have logic!

If it's any help mine has been a right handful for the last few days since out on the spring grass. I'm going to have to work a lot harder to keep on top of him.

Can you keep yours off the fresh grass for a few weeks to quell the bolshyness? Mine was off it for 24 hrs and it was like a different horse - completely back to his normal sweet self. Back on it yesterday - and today, a nightmare!!

I actually believe as bad as this sounds we all need that wake up call with horses to make us think a bit more.

For me it happened at 12 when I was double barrelled in the head after the horse cantered up spun and bucked with both legs into my jaw. Thank god I managed to get my left arm over my face. Broken jaw, broken arm, scars still on lips and nearly losing my upper front teeth has always kept my guard up.

It must feel so sad, annoying and disappointing but take it as a reminder and move forward. If it is the first broken bone in 30 yrs of you riding I think you have done well.

Huge hugs from Norway, dose yourself up and try to balance this traumatic ordeal with thoughts of all the times your horses have worked well in partnership with you, think of the good times ;-)

I am not taking down your ordeal honey just trying to get you to pause and wait a while before thinking along the lines you are. If I had given up at 12 after my biggest accident I would have missed out on so much. x
 
I had a similar wake up call about 9 months ago when my horse broke my arm. At the time I felt like selling him but over time you come to realise how lucky you were (If I hadn't have put my arm up, he would have got my head) and learn not to put yourself in the same situation again - now I don't tend to try to hold on... my life is worth more than that...

Chin up hun. Big hugs and get yourself some stronger painkillers!! they can't be much good!
 
HUGS big time. It will take time to feel relaxed again.
I know how you feel, they all catch us out from time to time, my arm is healing from a kick in late Jan. It took me a while to trust my OAP again, and I am more cautious now. IT Was entirely my fault for misjudging the situation. After >40 years you would think I would know better. They are big dangerous animals, and we need to remember that however much we love them we need to respect that.
Hope you feel better soon. Mentally and physically takes time to heal.

And forget six weeks too (sorry to put even more of a downer on you!).
Was over 5 months before the pain of moving my hand subsided. Soft tissue damage is apparently far worse than a break.
And it was only a piddly little arab that bounced on my hand, not a ruddy great 17hh lump!

I can't believe how quickly it happened. One minute he was walking by my side, the next he had jumped sideways on top of me, like scooby doo would jump into shaggy's arms!
 
I have 4 not very impressive scars on my hand from slipping over in the mud and a horse walking on my hand - so can sympathise with you!
