I have been quite concerned about Star as she has been so sluggish over the last month or so. It has literally been like flogging a dead horse every time I rode her. She has been dawdling along, no impulsion or get up and go, drops out of a trot as soon as possible and difficult to start and maintain a canter. She is ridden 6 times a week, either hacking, schooling or jumping lesson. I booked the vet for this Weds as I was concerned about possible anaemia (pale gums). I had also phoned a nutritionist who had recommended Alfa A Oil, Slim and Healthy and Propell (she was at the time on high fibre nuts and alfa a, with electrolytes and a vit/min supplement) But these feeding changes have not yet been implemented. (waiting for delivery!)

On Tues night she developed colic, luckily a mild dose. The vet came and took bloods as he was a little concerned poss about either tapeworm or an ulcer (she windsucks, but does not run up light in the slightest)

Weds morning she was back to normal and he told me to exercise her, gentle work to help everything keep moving and she was a different horse?!! Forward going, but still sensible, and, moving on from my leg really very nicely. She was energetic and interested, all in all a pleasure and fun to ride

I have ridden her twice since and she is absolutely raring to go, She has been the fun exciting horse I always wanted, not the laid back dawdling one I seemed to have! She can't wait to get into trot or canter and keeps going without me nagging at all. It's just been fantastic.

The only thing that has changed has been a bran mash am/pm since Tues and a change of bit to a NS Universal.

Could she have been feeling unwell for the period leading up to the colic, could it have been a kind of grumbling colic?

Any ideas, why the change? I am baffled but happy!

Galaxy Caramel and Orangina to anyone who gets this far!

Hi
My guy did this recently and I was very concerned because of his age- bloods taken and results indicated a worm burden eek- I worm to the book- worm count taken and low so know puzzled- on advice from vet wormed him well before time as he was looking collicky and heh he returned to his normal self within 36 hours- apparently the burden can be there from past history and can rear its ugly head- just a thought as your description of how things were with your horse are exactly what I went through with my guy.
