Showjumping!

For those who haven't been following and are interested, my dressage horse is for sale and I have been trying (very very badly) to sell him. I keep putting people off.

So, OH suggests we send him to Jabeena Maslin to try out his jumping skills to help sell him ( I don't jump).

She has had him for a short while now and says he has a huge amount of potential. Always nice to hear. And, has just told my partner that, if we could get him out doing a bit or competing, he would be worth at least 15k.

This coming from someone who, apparently, rave about many things.

Bit gutted in a way as we really really need to sell him asap and i have noone to jump him ( I cant afford to keep him there).

I have him advertised at 5.5k.

But, she thinks she may know of someone interested which is good but it looks as if someone will be getting a bargain.

BUT, I am so chuffed to bits my little chap has found something is is obviously very good at. I was told that he was popping 4ft with no problem the other day. He loved it apparently!!!!!

Shame you live in Somerset as I wouldn't have minded taking him out for you as a sort of loan arrangement and competing him. Seems a shame to sell him so cheap if he has so much potential

How fantastic is that , well apart from the having to sell him bit. I wonder how many horse or people in fact have hidden talents. Who knows, underneath my couch potato experience I could have the potential to be a golf pro, formula one driver or karate champion

dreams.......

Is this the one free jumping in your sig?
Looks like he's enjoying it if it is.

15K, think what you could do with that?
Could you not speculate to accumulate and stretch yourself to keep him at Jabeena's and then sell him for more.

I know, it's easy said ... if it was me, I couldn't possibly afford it, however much I might want to.

Thats the route my OH is thinking about. The rider at Jabeenas told my partner that Viento is the second best horse she has ever jumped!

I think he may approach her to have him for the winter....

Surely you could come to some arrangement with someone - they keep him and compete him for free, then split the profits in someway when he is sold? A share of 15k would make it worth someone's while to keep for a few months???

Loads of people are looking for horses to compete without buying them and you never know, with a bit more practice and training he may be worth even more!!!

Whilst I'm not doubting that for a minute, to get £15k for a 15hh horse you will need to be out jumping Newcomers double clears and showing scope to go on. To get him to this level will take 6 months at least serious training, this is not cheap and at the end of it you actually have to then sell him.

You know I think V is a smashing young horse, but I'm posting this because it is so easy to throw more money on training jus to sell and not make it back.

You are uch more likely to get someone who sees him as the bargain he is at £5-6k showing the potential jump than someone prepared to pay £15k once he is jumping Newcomers well as the market is much bigger.

Thanks and I agree with what you say totally. Hence the reason I would rather just sell him now. Esp as she has someone coming tomorrow who may be interested. However, I do like the idea of him going out and doing BSJA (not with me on him).

With livery costs of around £120 a week etc after a whole winter of training, not much profit would be made, I understand that totally. But, like I said, I really like the idea of my little chap going out and doing something he excels in.

I agree with Burtie - at the moment (I have just bought a horse) you can get a scopey 5-6 year old doing newcomers and possibly fox with scope for more for 8-10K. Not sure how old your horse is, and of course the right buyer could be out there, but just bear in mind that it may not be super easy to sell for £15K right now - probably even less so in 6 months time judging by the current economic climate. Your horse looks lovely and I am not saying he can't be worth £15K, but make sure you are completely realistic since you really need the money now.

There you go, my opinion without anyone even asking for it ... Good luck, he looks like a great little horse!

Glad he is going well, when Spanish horses jump, they JUMP! Am glad Burtie wrote her piece above as I feel the same way - I am looking at horses for under £10k who have winnings and are jumping Fox, so whilst the valuation is very flattering, in the current market I think it is unachievable unless someone completely and utterly fell in love with him - and we know he isn't *anyone's* ride. A bird in the hand and all that - take your £5.5k and enjoy spending it now, rather than speculating further (just look at the world today, Lehman has gone under, I mean WTF, the financial sector is falling apart!!!)

I do hope we get to see some pics of him jumping big fences before he is sold, he is such a dude!

Now that I totally understand. I really enjoyed following Hannah around the circuit with a pro jumper, the highlight picking up her winners rosette t Hickstead (how cool!), it did cost a lot but was worth it for me!

I would love to send her son Herbie out jumping as he has scope to burn, but now I'm not working there is no way I could afford it, so he has to make do with the smaller jumps with me on!

CAn I just please point out that the aim of this post was NOT whether I could make a profit on him or not? I am well aware of the current market as have been trying to sell one horse for months and have bought a horse also.

This post was supposed to be about what my chap was up to, what the trainer thought of him and how I feel about it.

I am also well aware that the amount she mentioned is just a figure and I know what would need to be done to achieve anywhere near it. I was more just trying to use it as an example of what said trainer thinks of my horses potential which, I find, personally quite uplifting and positive.

i agree. most people think the andis cant jump. mine jumps like a stag. but people dont consider them,.

just a small suggestion but your boy is a decent price for a good horse. may be its worth dropping the andalusion mention and see what responce you get.

when i had pluto (the lipi) advertised, when people asked hes breed and i said you could hear the silence, but boy could that horse jump. all the times i saw him jumped he never stopped or knocked a fence, and were talking some decent jumps. i think that especially in the uk, the spanish breeds are marketed as dressage horse, not good all rounders or jumpers.

Thats really interesting thanks. I have only just decided to change tact and advertise him as a jumper as opposed to purely dressage. Perhaps that might be the way to go?

yes i agree, your boy doesnt look like an andi from hes picture, you may question the long mane, but the colout and white face markings take the andi bit away. (this is what i think no affence ment)

it could be worth advertising him as an all rounder, potential jumper, i think jabeena used to have access to a x country course, could she take him round it??

if you take the breed factor away i think hes very well priced, if you add the andi bit then i can see where jabeenas coming from with the 15k, you only have to search the web at prices of the breed to know hes well priced,

if it helps ive put my andi stallion up at 4.5k which in stallion terms sounds like meat money but.,. hes not any bodies ride, i dont know if hes been bred from and has very mild copd.
