Hi

I have recently clipped my 15h3 Cob x Frisian gelding's feathers and as a result the farrier was alarmed by some lumps and bumps which are now visible under his ergots on his hind legs.

They are symmetrical (albeit a little larger on his hind left), not soft but not hard (feel like too much skin), don't feel like they have fluid in them, don't cause any discomfort and he is 100% sound.

I think I have managed to attach a picture but if not please pm me and I will send it!

Does anyone know what they are?

Any assistance appreciated.

My cob is worse than that, he has it right up to below the knee. My vet says it's scar tissue.caused by mites/ mud fever or both. I only saw it when I removed my horses feathers.

Oh great, so is there anything that can be done about it or is he stuck with lumpy bits? I'm guessing it's not serious and won't cause lameness or anything?????

You can get the vet to give an injection to prevent these mites biting. I believe it's a course of two injections and it lasts a whole season.
It will help if you keep the feathers clipped short. These mites can be a real problem causing nasty sores that can be difficult to heal.

It can cause lameness if it is very sore but if you treat the mites and keep the feathers short it should be ok. Mine will always be like that. I've decided to leave his feathers off perminently as im finding it very difficult to get rid of the mites with his feathers on. And I've had the injection done 4 times.

If you want feathers & why wouldn't you! Try pig oil on the legs rub it in once a week. If you still have mites before hand use the injections or the dog treatment methods to get it away, then the pig oil. This will keep water out, keep the legs clean (It brushes out for shows and the like) and should stop mites coming back.
My horse had it bad and i had to clip him to get control but pig oil is now almost 100% on top of it. He had worse symptoms than the pictures shown. Ian
