Hi all,

Ok my horse has been on alpha a oil for about a month and was ok at around 1/2 a scoop a day (with her Winergy medium energy), but then we upped it to 2 full scoops a day and she has suddenly turned from a bombproof darling into a spooky mess!!

One of the girls said she was a bit of a handful turning her out today so I rode tonight and I was eating ears for most of it! We jumped and razzed our way round the school for half an hour and then called it a day!

I am reducing the amount back down to 1/2 scoop a day and adding the Winergy back in...but does anyone know how long this will take to have her back to normal?
Has anyone else had this problem with the alpha oil? Do the other alpha's (regular and lite) have this effect too?

Thanks everyone - large G&T for getting this far! :D

I put my two on it for a short while over the winter to help keep condition on - it sent my rising 4 yr old absolutely mental - eyes on stalks, leaping about, mowing me down kind of mental.

I'd say it took a good two weeks before she was completely back to normal, but got a bit better within four or five days.

if you horse is reacting to the Alfalfa in Alfa A Oil which is basically just Alfalfa and Oil, then both Alfa A and Alfa A lite are Alfalfa and molasses or molasses extract so don't think it will be any better.

Well thats the weird thing criso - she's been on the winergy for months and that contains alot of alfalfa and she has been fine on it...

Twirly - 2 weeks  that will drive me banana's...maybe as she's only had the increased amount for a week the effect will go quicker than that.....or that may just be wishful thinking! :D

Well i've had her nearly 6 years and she has never reacted like this to spring grass so I would be very surprised if its that.

It ties in perfectly with the increase in the alfa a oil (which started about a week ago) and its the only thing thats changed. I had read on another forum from a few people who said their horses reacted badly to this product in particular....it does have a very high protein level 16% so wondered if that could have something to do with it?

Mine are on Alfa Oil, been on it since Jan and they've been brill on it- and believe me they react to molasses/sugars. Theres no molasses in Alfa oil as it's coated in Soya oil instead which provides slow release rather than instant energy- so shouldn't make them fizz up -it is high energy (calories) though.

Are you sure its not the spring grass coming through? - if not why not try cutting it back down or mixing in a low calorie chaff or trying a lighter version. Alfalfa is supposed to naturally have less sugars in it than grass.

Alfalfa does have a highish protein level which in itself makes it useful but some horses can react to that.

Alfa A Oil is better than some as it does not have any molasses added but it is possible that it is too high in protein.

I don't know Winergy at all and how much Alfalfa it has but if it has other things in it and is not as pure as Alfa A Oil it could be protein levels combined with the fact you said you had increased who much you are feeding.

The easy answer is take it away and see if she improves and if you are feeling brave you could try introducing it in a few weeks time to confirm it was the issue.
