My Horse is a Nightmare to Pull mane

Which furminator do you use? Have you got the equine one or just one of the cat or dog ones? I struggle pulling my horses mane so this sounds a good idea!

The equine one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000PUC3BO/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details) as I use it when my sec A is shedding as well. It's been brilliant and he doesn't mind it at all so we are all happy! I use the thinning comb to 'trim' the ends to the length I want (looks more natural than using scissors), then furminate to get rid of the thickness. I don't think I would ever go back to pulling manes now even with a horse that didn't mind it. :)

I wouldn't stand quietly for someone to pull my hair out in chunks - therefore I don't expect my horse to either! I use a Solo comb, gets the job done with no hassle and in half the time!

I used to not even be able to backcomb my girl before she would freak out!
However what i do now is I backcomb with a normal mane comb and wrap a few strands around and then apply downward pressure keeping the hair taunt eventually it will release. I can now pull my girl easily!
this has to be done after exercise though

Only just caugtt up on this!

I dont pull his mane out in guge chunks! I use a solo comb and it took me 4 hours because i kept having to stop- not because i wasnt pulling chunks out solidly beating him etc etc
I cant even brush it with a body brush- thats how bad he is!

Mane rake- Reg is very sensitive about his being done and so we don't push it. No point!

After exercise with some food, over a period of a week or so doing a little every day with the mane rake, and then just keeping on top of it so it never needs pulling properly to look good. Do the same with his tail, and he looks smart and is presentable but doesn't get stressed by the mane pulling!

Another vote for the solo comb. My mare used to freak when I tried to comb her mane but convinced her it was ok and now she is fine.
You people who are getting endy bits when plating are but chunks too big ? just cut a few hairs, I can honesty say my manes look as good as a pulled mane.

I have one that doesn't bat ano eyelid and another who freaks out at the back combing part and a 3rd that i leave natural.
I take a severe reaction as being an indication of pain and therefore wont pursue. I wont pull any mane now, i use scissors and can do an ok job, it just takes practice. My daughter competes in show jumping, but she doesn't have to have a plaited mane!

Sorry -didn't understand that at all!

My solo combed manes look as good as a pulled mane UNTIL I plait them! They're a lot thicker than a pulled mane somehow, even though they don't look it when unplaitted, and seem to have more layers and therefore bits when plaitted.

Op-yes, I backcomb then cut. But on a thick mane you may need to use something else to thin it. Backcombing & scissors gives a great finish for thinner manes or for discreet tidying of long manes.

I use a comb and bot knife! Back comb the mane and then just cut off with bot knife. Works a treat! I find solo combs break after a while and are very expensive.
