Sorry but I need to vent - went on a short hack today - gave horse a break & then tried to school him - but he had had enough & napped for all he was worth - tried to end on a good note and we did but such hard work - no reason for it except he's a stubborn git - (all checks have been done) have had & obviously still have issues with napping but today he was a pain in the butt - we will het there but sometimes I do despair of him - rethinking plans at the moment we will get there xx

Poor you.
I don't think i'd ever be able to hack Herbs then school him.( He's bad enough some days about just going in the school) He'd think I've done my work by taking you hacking now bog off if you think i'm going in the school.
Having delt with Herbies napping I know how frustraiting it can be esp when there is no reason for it. But as you say you will get there and trust me it so worth it in the end. xx

Thanks Laura - we will keep going , but that's exactly the way he is - I've been out surely I am not expected to do any more!! We thought we had started to turn a corner but the one that thinks he's in charge tried to reassert himself today - he went forwards in the end & ended up on a good note but could do much better x

Good on you for persavering (sp?) atleast you ended on a good note and made him go forwards. Hopefuly he's lurnt a lesson and next time he won't bother resisting so much.

If I did it with Herbs he would probably just throw himself on the floor and refuse to get up. lol

^ the thought of herbs laying on the floor tickled me :) .. I find with difficult horses ..little and often the best way to deal with it .. As if we r always nagging they switch off .. And quick to correct unwanted behaviour ..but even quicker to praise good behaviour ;) and as boring as it is horses learn best by repartition ..and consistency .. Takes a while ..but u will get there ;) also if the horse was good on a hack ( a nappy horse for instance) I would have left it at just the hack . Not have pushed my luck .. But there r times when I would school say 20mins then pootle down the rd to cool off ;)

I would do as Lambkins says and reverse it so schooling first then hack after to cool off and relax. One of mine wouldn't think of napping whilst the other one can make a living out of it if she thought she could get away with it *sigh*

Too be honest we should of known better than to try both - but it was a nice day he has been doing well - so thought we might get away with it - will know better next time - small steady steps will get us there xx

I have a mare that's a pain in the butt, however little you ask of her, she will give you that little bit less, I do love her really but my God..hard work! I think some of them are just like that. Good luck with your boy, hope you have a better time next time!
