he has to be sedated next thursday to have his teeth done
Do i need to do nil by mouth before? - if so for how long shouldnt he eat?
After the sedation - how long till he can eat and drink?
How long till i can safeley turn him out?

my man had to be sedated for his teeth, however it depends if you mean sedated as in totally out of it or just enough to calm him?

when mine was sedated, it was just enough to calm him and make him very drowzy, brought him in out the field before vet arrived so had been a normal morning with eating, etc.

after vet left, he advised i left him in his stable and stayed with him and observe him for an hour or 2 and don't let him have anything to eat -(due to his drowzy-ness, could choke etc) and then once he had come round after about 2 hours (take a book to read, passes the time :p) just turned him out in his field again (me being over protective stayed to watch for a further 30mins just to be sure, but turned out he was fine and i left him too it)

xx

no not fully sedted - just out of it a bit.\he was done last year but ive totally forgotten what to do!!!! I think last year (my firsrt yr with him) i was in total shock !xxx

my lad had to be done to do his teeth too. had to get two doses as he is fairly highly strung.within two hours he was grand and back out grazing!

Both of mine were sedated yesterday, the vet told me to leave them with no food for 3 hours, he didn't say anything about staying with them so I went home.
They sometimes sweat so it might be an idea to put a cooler on if it's cold.

I wouldn't give a big feed beforehand, although bringing in from grass is ok. While the horse is sedated allow him to balance himself, so don't try and prop him up by hanging onto the lead rope. Have a decent amount of bedding in case he goes down, but be on hand to stimulate if he shows signs of falling. You may have to slap his belly or give him a prod if he seems too unsteady. Of course don't do this while the EDT is carrying out the procedure- he will give you directions.
Afterwards, stay near by until he's fully alert.May be an hour, may be three. No hay or water. Put a cooler on if sweating. Don't turn out esp with a herd, until fully recovered. he can then have hay/grass/water as normal. Obviously, no riding.

Agree with horserider, in addition I have been advised to make sure they don't hang their head over the stable door, they can obstruct their airway. I normally watch them for at least a couple of hours (no food/water), then if they seem back to normal turn out and watch until I feel happy they are no longer under the influence.

very good point well made appylass! had totally forgotten about the hanging head over stable door bit :S luckily my pony's only a little one so he can't really rest his head on the door, however, my friends bigger horse was resting her head and they were worried she was obstructing her airways so they closed the top door too and sat in the stable with her.

i'm sure everything will go fine, nothing to worry about :)
xx

After my horse was sedated he lay down and went to sleep once the vet had finished as he was very dozy. I keep him at home so kept popping out to check on him. He was back to normal in around 3 hours i think. Just make sure he has plenty of water and like others I was told by the vet not to give him any hay until he was alert again incase he choked.

ty - i do remember last year when he was sedated i was petrified - totally unprepared and hated seeing him like that - now i feel much much more prepared - thank you everyone x

I would just follow vets advise. My mare was sedated on wednesday for teeth. she was turned out about 30 mins later on vets ok. No hay allowed but grass ok. Will depend how much sedative they have and your situation.

My vet was happy for her to be back outside so we turned them out and left.

To be honest this is the sort of question you should be asking your vet who will have the knowledge readily to hand and will not mind you asking.

Do i need to do nil by mouth before? - if so for how long shouldnt he eat? no carry on as normal

After the sedation - how long till he can eat and drink? when he's fully away for eating, always have water available for him

How long till i can safeley turn him out? when he's fully awake

don't hold onto his head or try to hold him up, he'll have much better balance if you leave him to drop his head and just keep hold of the leadrope incase he wakes up! Watch him with the door, we shut grills.
